The crisis at the Melbourne Rebels<\/a> has deepened after Rugby Australia confirmed that 10 staff members, including the chief executive, have lost their jobs.<\/p>\n

The nearly bankrupt Rebels entered voluntary administration last month<\/a> and their future beyond 2024 looks grim unless the Victorian government or a cashed up white knight can come to the rescue.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers addressed all Rebels staff except players on Wednesday to inform them that their roles were being made redundant.<\/p>\n

RA will now employ more than 80 per cent of the club's staff – including all players and high performance members – until the end of the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.<\/p>\n

But five administration staff, including \ufeffchief executive Baden Stephenson, were not so lucky and two casual and three contractor roles have also been ended.<\/p>\n

"A new CEO contract has not been offered for Baden to continue with the club," an RA statement said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

"RA would like to thank Baden for his years of work at the club and recognises this has been a difficult period for him and his team.<\/p>\n

"RA wishes to thank the administrator, the Victorian government and its relevant departments, the Rebels' partners, players, staff, members and fans for their cooperation and support at this time."<\/p>\n

The RA statement claimed the Rebels would retain a \ufeff"sufficient staffing model, complemented by support from existing RA staff, to effectively deliver the 2024 season while work is completed on the longer term model for rugby in Victoria".<\/p>\n

Rebels captain Rob Leota admitted it was an unsettling time for players but was doing his best to stay laser focused on round one, which kicks off on February 23.<\/p>\n

"It can go one of two ways," Leota told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"You can just throw in the towel or you go backs against the wall and you do something. I'm from Melbourne and I definitely see the impact that the Rebels are having on guys coming through and how important it is for young kids in Victoria, they want to play rugby as well."<\/p>\n

Rugby bosses \ufeffhave pledged that the Rebels will definitely play out the 2024 season but the club's future beyond is dire as administrators ponder a Super Rugby shake-up.<\/p>\n

"That can galvanize the group or that can split the group and we're just waiting to see what happens with the Rebels – whether they can stick with it consistently," former Rebels assistant coach Morgan Turinui told WWOS radio.<\/p>\n

"I'd expect them to come out of the box pretty hard and fast. They were very good against the Waratahs two weeks ago in a trial.
