Nicho Hynes<\/a> has revealed he nearly pulled out of the 2023 NRL All Stars<\/a> match at the eleventh hour after his mother was jailed.<\/p>\n

Julie Hynes was sent to jail on drug offences barely 48 hours before last year's All Star match \u2013 which was held in New Zealand for the first time \u2013 kicked off.<\/p>\n

Speaking to 9News at the same camp a year on, the 2022 Dally M winner said it was his teammates rallying around him that convinced him to stay.<\/p>\n

"There was a moment in time after that event, we went back and we all had a yarn and it was special," he told 9News.<\/p>\n

"I had the room and told them all what happened, and there was no way I was going home.<\/p>\n

"It's hard to explain without getting emotional \u2013 they become your brothers for life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said the bond he formed with his teammates that day is now unbreakable.<\/p>\n

"At that camp, we became connected. You've got the likes of Cody Walker sitting there with his arm over me, giving me a hug saying 'it's going to be alright'.<\/p>\n

"Latrell and Latrell's brother, Shaq, he was awesome, 'Nicho, we've got you, you're in the right place'."<\/p>\n

Playing at half-back two nights later, Hynes scored a try, kicked two goals and was awarded player-of-the-match as the Indigenous side took a 28-24 victory.<\/p>\n

This will be Hynes' third All Stars match. He said just being in the camp is a life-changing experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"When I started in this camp, I was a shy little boy pretty much \u2013 I was a little boy who was scared to come out of my shell and be a proud Aboriginal man," he told 9news.<\/p>\n

"Now, I just feel really confident in my skin."<\/p>\n

He said the 2024 All Stars campaign felt different.<\/p>\n
