Ange Postecoglou<\/a> has led an outpour of disapproval from several Premier League<\/a> managers towards the controversial proposal to introduce a blue card for referees to sanction players with.<\/p>\n

According to a report in the UK Telegraph on Friday, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) \u2014 which is the body that determines the laws of football<\/a> \u2014 is set to announce a trial of blue cards and sin bins for dissent<\/a>with the intent to improve on-pitch behaviour.<\/p>\n

As has been reported, \ufeffa blue card can be drawn when dissent is shown towards referees and other match officials. The card could also encompass when professional fouls occur.<\/p>\n

The penalty for receiving a blue card is 10 minutes in the sin bin.<\/p>\n

A player will subsequently receive a red card if they first cop two blue cards or one yellow card and one blue.<\/p>\n

As it stands, a player shown a red card or two yellow cards is expelled from playing out the rest of the game.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The IFAB reportedly delayed announcing the proposed trial following talks with FIFA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"FIFA wishes to clarify that reports of the so-called 'blue card' at elite levels of football are incorrect and premature," football's governing body said in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n

FIFA also said that any trial should occur at a lower level before being approved by IFAB for use in top-level football.<\/p>\n

Addressing media ahead of Tottenham's clash with Brighton, Postecoglou stated that the concept could prove another blunder by football's authorities after the introduction of the widely-criticised VAR system.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I struggle to understand why this urgency all of a sudden to bring in new things. I don't know if there's that much wrong with the game as I see it," he said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

"My biggest issue with the game right now is that VAR has changed the experience, whether you're a player, a manager or a supporter.<\/p>\n

"Beyond that, I don't know why a different colour card is going to make any difference."<\/p>\n

Postecoglou also claimed that the change would negatively influence the game.<\/p>\n

"I'm in a different space with where I think football's at," he said.<\/p>\n

"But one team being down to 10 men for 10 minutes, you know what it's going to do to our game? It's going to destroy it, mate. You're going to have one team just sitting there trying to waste time for 10 minutes waiting for a guy to come on.<\/p>\n

"Every other sport is trying to speed up and declutter. All we're trying to do is go the other way for some bizarre reason \u2026<\/p>\n

"The reason this game is more popular than any other sport in the world is because you can get a ball, put two bags down as goals and away you go."<\/p>\n

Postecoglou's concerns were also echoed by\ufeff Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, Arsenal's Mikel Arteta, Chelsea's Mauricio Pochettino and Newcastle United's Eddie Howe,<\/p>\n

"It doesn't sound like a fantastic idea in the first moment, but actually, I can't remember the last fantastic idea [which] came from these guys [or] if they ever had one," Klopp said.<\/p>\n

The \ufeffinclusion of a blue card would mark the first major change to football's card-related rules since they were introduced for the 1970 FIFA World Cup.<\/p>\n

"As a fan of the game, I've always loved the fact that for the most part, our game has remained untouched from my 40 years' experience in it," Postecoglou said.<\/p>\n

"All of a sudden we've seen such a major transformation.<\/p>\n

"We've let technology in the door, we know that's going to affect it. Let's just see how that plays out before we start thinking about other significant changes."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
