J\ufeffack Wighton<\/a> has remained coy on his State of Origin future, but hinted that his personal relationship with NSW<\/a> coach Michael Maguire<\/a> could sway his decision.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old made the shock call last year to retire from rep football\ufeff, withdrawing himself from Blues contention and end-of-year Kangaroos selection.<\/p>\n

Wighton initially wanted to focus on helping the Raiders<\/a> in his final season at the club, but now finds himself alongside a litany of Origin-calibre players at the Rabbitohs<\/a> after signing a long-term deal with the famous franchise.<\/p>\n

New club teammates Latrell Mitchell<\/a> and Cameron Murray<\/a> have been standouts in the NSW side \ufefffor a lengthy period and in an interview with 9News Sydney, Wighton remained non-committal regarding his rep future.<\/p>\n

"[I want to] get my foot in the door with Souths and put my best foot forward there," Wighton said.<\/p>\n

"We'll see where the wind blows me after that."<\/p>\n

But the influence of Maguire – who worked as an assistant at Canberra in recent years and publicly expressed his desire to see the utility return to the sky blue jumper<\/a> – could have an impact on \ufeffWighton's decision.<\/p>\n

"He lives around the corner, he's got a young family," Wighton said.<\/p>\n

"Apart from Latrell and a few others, we don't have many people here. I went up and had a bit of dinner and took the kids over to have a swim."<\/p>\n

After a rollercoaster tenure at the green machine that saw him earn a Clive Churchill Medal \ufeffin the 2019 grand final loss, Wighton has now made the move he never expected, leaving his roots behind for a chance to win a premiership.<\/p>\n

But quizzed on whether or not the transition was daunting, Wighton gave an honest response and believes there's plenty of work still to do be done at Redfern.<\/p>\n

"Yeah definitely – especially Sydney, it's one place I promised myself I would never live," he said.<\/p>\n

"I'm a country boy and I was too mad to live in a place like this I think – I get lost in the wind. Here I am in the red and green and loving life.<\/p>\n

"One thing I've learned over the years is rosters mean absolutely nothing . There's a lot of hard work, a lot of luck, a lot of sad times and happy times that goes through it."<\/p>\n
