A\ufeffustralian head selector George Bailey<\/a> has urged critics to be patient with young all-rounder Cameron Green<\/a> ahead of a crucial tour of New Zealand.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old returned to the Test lineup for the two-game series against the West Indies<\/a> and didn't set the world on fire, but will earn another crack against the Black Caps<\/a> later this month.<\/p>\n

Green has long been seen as the great white hope for Aussie cricket, with his technical and powerful batting matched by his undeniable fast-bowling \ufeffability.<\/p>\n

But with pressure mounting on the West Australian, Bailey reiterated on Friday the patience required to allow Green to grow into his role long-term.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"His last two years have been a whirlwind I imagine at different times … he's travelled with the team basically non-stop," he told reporters.<\/p>\n

"He's had fluctuations of high performance and then different times where it's been a challenge, and constantly learning through that.<\/p>\n

"Both on the field from a skillset perspective and how he actually performs, but also off the field and how you deal with that and how you deal with life on the road and being on tour, and switching between formats.<\/p>\n

"It's a challenge that all those players do go through, but I guess when you are younger and you get exposed to that, it can be tough. <\/p>\n

"I'm sure if you ask Cam he wouldn't have it any other way."<\/p>\n

Green has had sporadic stints in the white-ball formats for Australia with mixed results, but will return to Sheffield Shield in preparation for the trip across the Tasman to face a strong Kiwi outfit.<\/p>\n

Despite his absence for recent T20 fixtures, Green remains a genuine contender for this year's World Cup according to the chief decision-maker.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"We know he's going to go to the IPL and get a big batch of T20 cricket," Bailey said.<\/p>\n

"It's a constant conversation with multi-format players, just working out the priority at any given time and making sure they get what they need when you can try and squeeze it in.<\/p>\n

"He's certainly one that as we're finalising that 15 for the World Cup, his name will be firmly in the mix."<\/p>\n
