Football<\/a> referees could soon have a third card in their pocket to sanction players.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That's according to the UK Telegraph, which reports the International Football Association Board is set to announce a trial of blue cards for dissent.<\/p>\n

It would mark the first major change to football's card-related rules since they were introduced for the 1970 FIFA World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The blue card can be drawn when dissent is shown against match officials or when professional fouls occur.<\/p>\n

The penalty for receiving a blue card would be 10 minutes on the sideline.<\/p>\n

A player will subsequently receive a red card if they first cop two blue cards or one yellow card and one blue.<\/p>\n

After social media lit up against the introduction, FIFA issued a statement confirming the trial would not take place at the elite level.<\/p>\n

The UK Telegraph reports the England Football Association was prepared to use the FA Cup as a test bed.<\/p>\n

FIFA said any trial should happen at a lower level before being approved by IFAB (International Football Association Board) for higher divisions.<\/p>\n

"FIFA wishes to clarify that reports of the so-called 'blue card' at elite levels of football are incorrect and premature," a statement read.<\/p>\n

"Any such trials, if implemented, should be limited to testing in a responsible manner at lower levels, a position that FIFA intends to reiterate when this agenda item is discussed at the IFAB AGM on March 2."<\/p>\n

Football Australia has already trialled a similar 'temporary dismissal' system, akin to the blue card.<\/p>\n

"The blue card could serve as an educational mechanism for players, parents, and coaches, which is a common challenge for community match officials," Football Australia's head of referees Nathan Magill told the Sydney Morning Herald.<\/p>\n

"It's the goal of Football Australia to enhance the experience of community match officials. As such, we are open to exploring options that can assist referees in managing the game effectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"To that end, we are developing a series of initiatives for this community football season to enhance the match environment for all involved."<\/p>\n

It's commonplace in matches for referees to be surrounded in-match when players are sanctioned by way of a penalty, yellow card, or red card.<\/p>\n

Referee abuse has been in the spotlight in Australia after footage of an assault in Sydney garnered significant viewership on social media.<\/p>\n

Western Sydney Wanderers coach Marko Rudan is staring down a heavy sanction for blasting referees for a so-called "stigma" against his players.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Australian-Iranian referee Alireza Faghani was doxxed during the recent Asia Cup and received swathes of abuse online.<\/p>\n
