Former Lions captain Tom Rockliff<\/a> has blasted the AFL<\/a>'s new rule changes for the upcoming season.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday\ufeff, the AFL announced several amendments to the competition's rules<\/a> which intend to enhance the game while prioritising player safety.<\/p>\n

One such\ufeff amendment includes revisions to the AFL's MRO regulations and tribunal guidelines on smothers, run-down tackles and striking to further protect players.<\/p>\n

From this season,\ufeff if a player chooses to leave the ground in an attempt to smother the ball, \ufeff"any reasonably foreseeable high contact" with their opponent that is "at least low impact" will be deemed to be "careless at a minimum", unless the player has taken all reasonable steps to avoid high contact or attempted to "minimise the force" of high contact.<\/p>\n

The league also tightened the reportable offence parameters around run-down tackles.<\/p>\n

These sanctions hope to deter the tackling player from driving a tackled player into the ground "with excessive force".<\/p>\n

Speaking to \ufeffTriple M's Breakfast with Marto, Margaux & Dan,<\/em> Rockliff claimed that the rule changes would have little impact on improving the game.<\/p>\n

"There's going to be so much confusion around this," he said.<\/p>\n

"We're the only sport in the world that has this need or necessity to change so many rules from season to season.<\/p>\n

"It certainly doesn't make the game any better."<\/p>\n

Rockliff argued that no matter how many rules the AFL implement, it will never fully eliminate the risk of injuries to players in a contact and collision sport.<\/p>\n

"You want players to leave the game making sure their head's intact, etcetera, etcetera, but sometimes there are accidents that occur and they're just unavoidable in a contact sport," he said.<\/p>\n

In a \ufeffsomewhat bizarre inclusion, the AFL also introduced the prohibition of whistling from the interchange bench.<\/p>\n

This change purportedly came about because of excessive whistling from club officials on the boundary.<\/p>\n

"There's so many noises out on the ground. If that's our biggest issue in AFL footy then the game's going pretty well," Rockliff said.<\/p>\n

"What are they going to do if someone whistles? Are they going to play a free kick during the game? Are they going to be given a written notice?<\/p>\n

"It's just a ridiculous rule.<\/p>\n

"What often happens is when you get a room full of smart people is common sense is left at the door and they all come up with these bright ideas. No one thinks about the in-use or the common sense of it.<\/p>\n

\"Umpires<\/p>\n

"It makes no sense at all to ban a whistle \u2014 it's never going to impact the result of the game. So, if it's not going to impact the results of the game, why are we even worrying about it?"<\/p>\n

Instead of focusing on such frivolous rules, Rockliff believed the league should be more concerned with\ufeff matters such as the controversial advantage call paid to Brisbane's Lachie Neale during the side's grand final<\/a> loss to Collingwood last year.<\/p>\n

As the Lions attempted to make one last-ditch effort forward in the four-point defeat, Neale was tripped just outside the 50m arc.<\/p>\n

Without hearing the umpire's whistle, teammate Zac Bailey frantically played on as the umpire called advantage.<\/p>\n

"I still look back at the grand final and I'm still wondering why the advantage was paid, and Lachie Neale hasn't got the ball back in his hands to give him a chance to win the grand final," he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
