B\ufeffroncos<\/a> players had one hand on the 2023 NRL<\/a> premiership trophy, and in 26 minutes of Nathan Cleary magic it was snatched away from them<\/a> in the most brutal fashion.<\/p>\n

And if the pain of losing the grand final from 16 points up wasn't hard enough to cope with, they were forced to relive it only a couple of months later.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBrisbane coach Kevin Walters<\/a> sat the entire squad down as soon as they returned for pre-season, and made them watch those 26 minutes of heartbreak.<\/p>\n

While Walters called them "highlights" it certainly didn't feel that way for the beaten players.<\/p>\n

"I didn't want to do it at the time," veteran halfback Adam Reynolds told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

Even Walters' son, Billy, says he was filthy at his father for forcing the team to relive their nightmare.<\/p>\n

"I didn't think there was much point doing that, I thought he was bringing up old wounds," Walters told WWOS.<\/p>\n

"But he made a good point that we need to learn from it and get over it, put it in the past, so we've done that.<\/p>\n

"We don't talk about it anymore. I think I realised after we watched it and after he spoke to us about it that it was a good thing to do, so we weren't looking back on it or wondering what went wrong.<\/p>\n

"We addressed it that day and now it's buried.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Even Reynolds, who has been playing in the NRL for 12 years, eventually understood and agreed with what Walters was trying to do.<\/p>\n

"We had patches like that throughout the season where we simply weren't good enough. We stopped playing football or we tried to protect a lead," Reynolds said.<\/p>\n

"No doubt we will be better for going through that video session.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

For 33-year-old Reynolds, 2024 marks the decade anniversary since his first and only NRL premiership.<\/p>\n

Only Alex Johnson and Tom Burgess remain at South Sydney from that triumphant 2014 \ufeffteam – and the latter has just announced this will be his final season in the cardinal and myrtle.<\/p>\n

While Reynolds doesn't often allow himself to get sentimental about those halcyon days at Redfern, he admits the thought of emulating that success with the Broncos is what's driving him into a 12th – and probably 13th – season.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's something that I'm desperate, I want to do at the Broncos," he said.<\/p>\n

"We got so close last year and the way we finished up, there's a sour taste there. But it motivates you to do better next year."<\/p>\n
