South Africa's coaching coup is set to make the champion Springboks<\/a> an even more formidable foe as they shoot for an unprecedented three-peat of Rugby World Cups in Australia in 2027.<\/p>\n

Rassie Erasmus, the architect of South Africa's back to back world titles<\/a>, has lured former All Blacks five-eighth Tony Brown to his brains trust as the attack coach.<\/p>\n

Brown, known for his innovation, could unlock the Springboks backline and add another dimension \ufeffto a team feared for its brutality, defence and set-piece excellence.<\/p>\n

It will also add an intriguing subplot to this year's Rugby Championship as \ufeffBrown matches wits with his former All Blacks teammate Scott Robertson.<\/p>\n

Robertson has taken the New Zealand coaching reins from Ian Foster while another Kiwi, Joe Schmidt, is in charge of the Wallabies.<\/p>\n

Brown scored 171 points in 18 Tests for New Zealand and most recently worked as an assistant coach with Japan.<\/p>\n

The 49-year-old had two stints playing Super Rugby in South Africa with the Sharks and Stormers.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"What an acquisition… he was amazing," Brown's former Sharks teammate Brad Barritt told 'The Boks Office' podcast.<\/p>\n

"The guy to learn from\u2026 to date probably the best pass I've ever seen. It was just on a sixpence every single time. That's an amazing coup."<\/p>\n

Brown was coached by Erasmus at the Stormers in 2008.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Erasmus coached the Springboks to victory at the 2019 World Cup in Japan then became South Africa director of rugby.<\/p>\n

In that role, he still played a big part in helping his former assistant Jacques Nienaber win the 2023 World Cup in France in October.<\/p>\n

Nienaber left in December to coach Leinster, and Erasmus has agreed to take the helm again.<\/p>\n

"It is a massive honour to coach the Springboks, and I am grateful for the trust placed in me," Erasmus said.<\/p>\n

"The main difference between the last four years and this season is that I will be more hands on at the field sessions.<\/p>\n

"In my role as director of rugby in the last four years I continued to oversee the team structures and strategy in conjunction with Jacques and the other coaches, so it should be an easy transition back into the head coach role."<\/p>\n

Erasmus has been in hospital for more than a week while recovering from chemical burns while using a powerful detergent.<\/a><\/p>\n

He suffered burns to his arms and chest in what was described as a freak accident.<\/p>\n

But he's already started working with staff for their first assignments in July, two home Tests against Ireland and a first visit by Portugal.<\/p>\n

Former Test referee Jaco Peyper, who recently retired, has also joined the staff as a laws adviser.<\/p>\n

"We already had our first coaching session this week at the hospital and it's great to see the enthusiasm among the coaches to get the season underway," Erasmus said.<\/p>\n

In another appointment, two time World Cup winner and No.8 Duane Vermeulen will be a roving coach to all national teams.<\/p>\n

"We believe that with the continuity in the coaching structures and the exciting additions, we are in good hands in the ultimate objective of claiming a hat trick of World Cup titles," SA Rugby president Mark Alexander said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
