In a captivating finish to an open-water swim<\/a> at the World Aquatics Championships on Wednesday night (AEDT), the first Australian selected for Paris 2024<\/a>\ufeff fell agonisingly short of securing gold.<\/p>\n

Sunshine Coast athlete Chelsea Gubecka led a tight pack\ufeff as she surged into the final 150 metres of the women's 5km swim in Doha, before losing the lead and collecting silver.<\/p>\n

Australian divers also picked up silver as Melbourne's Annabelle Smith and Perth's Maddison Keeney finished second in the women's 3m synchronised event.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Olympic<\/a> duo's silver medal performances followed the gold medal triumph of\ufeff Australia's Alysha Koloi on Saturday morning (AEDT), when the Brisbane diver came up trumps in the women's 1m springboard.<\/p>\n

Gubecka was announced as the first Australian picked for the Paris Olympics in October last year<\/a>, earning selection in the women's 10km swim, but the 25-year-old opted against contesting that distance at the world titles.<\/p>\n

"It was harder than I thought to sit and watch the 10km earlier this week so it was really great to get out there," Gubecka said.<\/p>\n

"There are things to think about and some takeaways.<\/p>\n

"I didn't really know my form coming in so just wanted to test and see how we were progressing.<\/p>\n
