What is holding Test cricket<\/a> back?<\/p>\n

Former English paceman Stuart Broad<\/a> says it's a plethora of things, particularly the world of short form cricket, specifically T20<\/a>, continuing its steady rise to the top.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The fifth highest wicket taker in Test cricket history, Broad \ufeffknows that there is a solution to the constant overlapping of domestic and international competitions, as well as players prioritising T20 matches.<\/p>\n

"I am a believer particularly that T20 and Test cricket can live as great friends. They can live together, they can work together and grow the sport," Broad told SportsBoom.<\/p>\n

"I think players have a love for Test cricket still."<\/p>\n

Broad's solution is simple. He says it's time to \ufeffremove "limitations" that have been placed on Test cricket and open it up the way T20 is to multiple sponsors.<\/p>\n

It will keep people interested in the long form of the game, Broad believes.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The limitations don't work. So there's certainly scope to open up Test match cricket to partners and bring in finances that way," Broad said.<\/p>\n

"In T20 cricket you only have to look at the shirts out there. You've got sponsor, sponsor, sponsor – like Formula 1.<\/p>\n

"Test cricket is so limited and so structured, I used to get told off for having an Adidas logo on my sweat band.<\/p>\n

"You would get fined for it, so the limitations don't work."<\/p>\n

Broad suggested bridging the "gap" between the highest and lowest paid Test nations through sponsor utilisation, to ensure equal pay for all international competitors.<\/p>\n

It may increase hunger to represent your country then, he believes.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"There's certainly scope to open up Test match cricket to partners and bring in finances that way," Broad said.<\/p>\n

"We need to reduce the gap between the lowest paid nations and the top paid nations in Test cricket. If you could get to the stage where players were paid similarly around the world then you've got more chance of attracting players to play it."<\/p>\n

Meantime, Australian cricketing legend Ricky Ponting\ufeff<\/a> has suggested a cap be placed on the number of franchise leagues players can be part of on a yearly basis, to ensure Test cricket remains a priority.<\/p>\n

A prime example of this was Pakistan's Harris Rauf choosing to compete in the BBL over the summer for the Melbourne Stars<\/a>, instead of representing his country in its Test match series against Australia.<\/p>\n

"Nothing has ever really been put in place to block these competitions happening," Ponting said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\"Ponting<\/p>\n

"I know certain countries have got limits on how many competitions their players can play in, and I actually think that's not a bad model, to be honest.<\/p>\n

"That protects the country from international availability for their players and still allows individuals to go out and make money outside their international commitments."<\/p>\n

But Ponting admits it won't be easy to handle the rapid growth of domestic leagues and how they work alongside international commitments.<\/p>\n

A prime example of the struggle is already evident in the BBL, with players such as Australian Test vice-captain Steve Smith having issues with his availability to appear for the Sydney Sixers for even one match alongside his international commitments.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It is going to be the biggest challenge I think for the game going forward, how we manage the growth of these domestic competitions and slotting them all in with international duty and even overlapping one another," Ponting said.<\/p>\n

"That's the challenge we've got with the BBL now with (Dubai) and South Africa happening when they do, our little window is just being gobbled up more and more almost every year, to the point with the BBL finals this year where most of the overseas and better players are not playing in the BBL to fill contracts elsewhere."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
