Adelaide Crows<\/a> veteran Rory Sloane<\/a> will join Mason Cox<\/a> to become only the second on-field glasses-clad AFL<\/a> star.<\/p>\n

Sloane underwent emergency eye surgery on a detached retina a week ago<\/a> after experiencing symptoms after a training session.<\/p>\n

It's the second time he's undergone the same procedure on the same eye. The first surgery in 2021 relegated him to the stands for a month.<\/p>\n

But the 255-game veteran is well on his way to recovery.<\/p>\n

Although he has been up and about walking and stretching, he is yet to get clearance from his surgeon to do any more.<\/p>\n

"The plan is to build back up next week," he told 9News Adelaide.<\/p>\n

"It's two weeks from surgery that I can start building back up into some exercise stuff."<\/p>\n

That he's even up at all is in itself remarkable. Recovery from detached retina surgery often requires significant time lying flat with closed eyes, unable to watch TV or even look at a phone screen.<\/p>\n

Sloane suffered a similar scare late last season, forced from the ground against the Swans in round 22. Scans cleared him of retina damage then.<\/p>\n

Sloane said he's still planning to play his 16th season, but will be forced to wear glasses similar to Cox's or potentially risk going blind later in his life.<\/p>\n

The Pies ruckman has worn glasses on-field since 2022 \u2013 including Collingwood's grand final triumph last season \u2013 having undergone six eye surgeries.<\/p>\n

"That's probably the most responsible thing for me to do now \u2026 look at what prevention methods I can get."<\/p>\n

This season is expected to be the 33-year-old's last.<\/p>\n

The Crows will get their 2024 campaign underway on the Gold Coast against the Suns on March 16.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
