Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting<\/a> believes Jake Fraser-McGurk<\/a> is destined to become a Test cricketer after making his ODI debut against the West Indies.<\/p>\n

Fraser-McGurk has given the world a glimpse of his talents. He scored 10 off five balls on debut and followed it up with 41 off 18 in the third ODI.<\/p>\n

The explosive right-hander has been in incredible form this season, his century off just 29 balls for South Australia<\/a> against Tasmania in the one-day domestic cup broke AB de Villiers' record for fastest one-day century.<\/p>\n

Ponting, who was recently unveiled as coach of the Washington Freedom<\/a> in the US' Major League Cricket, believes Fraser-McGurk's trajectory will lead to a baggy green. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Yep I do, absolutely (see him as a Test player)," he told media on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"Just because of the talent he's got. And we've seen it with other players in the past, like a Shahid Afridi who came on the stage as an ultra-talented ball-striking 17-year-old who could bowl leg spin.<\/p>\n

"When you've got that sort of talent, you need to be exposed to cricket at the highest level to work it out, and I think Jake can do that. <\/p>\n

"I'm definitely backing him one day to play Test cricket."<\/p>\n

Ponting added there's definite correlation between Fraser-McGurk and David Warner, with both men making their presence known in the short-format. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I think he's someone who can well and truly be fast-tracked through the Australian system, because of the natural talent he's got, it reminds me a bit of a David Warner-sort of introduction into Australian cricket," he said.<\/p>\n

"When we saw him at the start I think everyone doubted whether he was going to be good enough to play Test cricket technically."<\/p>\n

Ponting said he believed Fraser-McGurk had as much a talent as Warner, and said Australian cricket would only be stronger for getting him into the system early where he can "work out the best way to have success in all formats".\ufeff<\/p>\n

With the T20 World Cup in June, Fraser-McGurk's name could come into contention as Australia looks to win all three major trophies in Test cricket, ODIs and T20I.<\/p>\n

However, despite praising the 21-year-old, Ponting doesn't believe he should be selected.<\/p>\n

"Obviously, there's only so many people you can pick in the World Cup squad, isn't there," Ponting said.<\/p>\n

"He'll get other opportunities, but the more he can get (and) the earlier he can get them, the better it will be.<\/p>\n

"I'm not saying at all that he should have been picked in the World Cup squad because they've put together a really good squad anyway, and one that on paper will look as good as probably any team going there. <\/p>\n

"He'll have to bide his time, but as we saw (Tuesday), he looks pretty keen to make the most of the opportunities that he gets."\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
