Brisbane Lions<\/a> have been handed a $20,000 sanction by the AFL<\/a> for breach \ufeffof AFLW<\/a> concussion guidelines.<\/p>\n

The breach relates to Lions \ufeffdual-athlete Sophie Conway and the club's failure to follow correct protocol during the AFLW grand final<\/a>.<\/p>\n

$10,000 of the fine will be included in Brisbane's AFLW soft cap while a further $10,000 will be suspended and not payable unless a similar breach occurs in Brisbane's AFL or AFLW program in 2024.<\/p>\n

With three minutes remaining in the third quarter of the grand final, the AFL's concussion medical spotter notified Brisbane that an observation had been made into a motor incoordination (stumble) from Conway.<\/p>\n

Due to the incident, Brisbane were required to immediately remove Conway from the field and subject her to an assessment which includes a SCAT5.<\/p>\n

According to the AFL, Brisbane's doctor didn't see the message with Conway staying on the field for the third quarter.<\/p>\n

Once notified, the doctor assessed Conway at the third quarter break. The 24-year-old told the doctor she lost balance due to physical exhaustion, rather than contact from the opposition.<\/p>\n

Conway returned to the field in the fourth quarter with the doctor reviewing video footage of the incident. She had not been subject to a SCAT5 test.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Conway was removed from the field and undertook a SCAT5 test. She was found not to have any concussion symptoms, and was then allowed to play out the remaining minutes of the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

Due to the AFL's strict protocols around protecting player health, Brisbane have now been punished. \ufeff<\/p>\n
