N\ufeffew Blues<\/a> coach Michael Maguire<\/a> has refused to guarantee James Tedesco<\/a> selection in this year's State of Origin<\/a> series.<\/p>\n

Instead the long-time fullback and captain will have to compete for his jersey like every other squad member, as the man they call "Madge" promises a new era of New South Wales success.<\/p>\n

\ufeffTedesco, 31, has played six consecutive Origin series for his state and hasn't missed a clash since debuting in game three of the 2016 series.<\/p>\n

And while former coach Brad Fittler wouldn't entertain the notion of dropping Tedesco last year, Maguire is taking a completely different approach.<\/p>\n

"I respect all those boys that have been in the past, but I'm telling everyone to look forward, we've got to move forward," he told media on Wednesday when asked specifically about incumbent captain Tedesco.<\/p>\n

"I know that he's had a very good pre-season, and no doubt like any champion player, he's still a champion player. I'm looking forward to seeing Teddy play some really good footy.<\/p>\n

"At the moment I'm not going to make any statements around the team, I said that when I first arrived.<\/p>\n

"I want to let the players go and play and then from there we'll work out which way we want to go.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

While Tedesco is considered one of the best fullbacks of his era and is the 2019 Dally M Medallist, his form over the past two seasons has been questionable.<\/p>\n

\ufeffFittler refused to consider dropping his skipper from the Blues side and was loyal to a fault, but after three series losses in four years many fans wondered what the coach was being loyal to.<\/p>\n

The likes of fit-again Ryan Papenhuyzen, Dylan Edwards and Tom Trbojevic are sure to put heat on the veteran No.1 come selection time.\ufeff<\/p>\n

While Maguire isn't sounding the death knell for anyone's Origin career yet, he says his 2024 Blues team will\ufeff be picked on form alone.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI want players who are in really good form, not a lot of noise around what's going on, allowing them to be at their best," he said.<\/p>\n

"I definitely am looking at form right now, for sure. History is one thing but I'm looking forward, we want to create (history) too.<\/p>\n

"When you're in really good form… you take that into the arena, and it breeds around the group, it builds a lot of confidence and belief.<\/p>\n

"I want the NSW players to be the best within their teams, so they're coming into this arena at their best.<\/p>\n

"There's massive buy-in from all the players. They are all about making sure we build the jersey."<\/p>\n

Maguire is regarded as one of the most experienced coaches in the game.<\/p>\n

He won an NRL premiership \ufeffwith South Sydney in 2014 and was most recently in charge of the Kiwis when they shocked Australia in last year's Pacific Championships final.<\/p>\n

One of his premiership players, Greg Inglis, reckons the Blues are set for a serious shake-up under Maguire.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"There's going to be a huge shock to the system of NSW rugby league, but it's only got to strengthen Origin," Maroons legend Inglis said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"I've been on the receiving end of his sprays sometimes. But he's a man who wants what's best for his team, he's not in it for himself."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
