There's always something else you can try, new ways to train and entirely new goals to set your sights on. I also love the way that climbing is something I can share with the people I love, regardless of skill level, because there's always something in the gym or at the crag for everyone."

Harrison and Mackenzie will compete in the lead/boulder event in Paris. Lead requires athletes to climb as high as they can in six minutes on a wall that's taller than 15 metres, whereas in boulder they're tasked with climbing 4.5-metre walls without ropes. They have a limited period of time and have to do it in the fewest attempts possible.

Sport climbing was one of four sports that made their Olympic debuts in Tokyo, along with karate, skateboarding and surfing.

"I love the feeling of working something that feels so physically and mentally hard," Mackenzie said.

"Climbing is also so diverse in its movements, which I love. Keeping our fingers strong and injury-free is a unique aspect of our training, as well.

"I think in a lot of ways it's very similar to some more established Olympic sports, but then we've got these very unique skill-based aspects that have to be really honed to a very natural and instinctual level."

Meet Australia's newest Olympic "Spiderman".
