Belinda Clark Award winner Ash Gardner<\/a> has admitted women's cricket couldn't mirror the men's game in the future, as the presence of T20 franchise<\/a>continue to impact the sport.<\/p>\n

The Women's Premier League in India<\/a> will start on February 24, and already there's been scheduling issues with four England players choosing to play in the tournament instead of the first three T20I's against New Zealand.<\/p>\n

Those players – Danni Wyatt, Sophie Ecclestone, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Alice Capsey – were given a choice by the England Cricket Board to choose one, despite the WPL finishing on March 17 and the T20I series commencing on March 19.<\/p>\n

Fellow England stars Heather Knight and Lauren Bell\ufeff decided to withdraw from the T20 tournament and represent their country instead.<\/p>\n

Gardner, who was bought by Gujarat Titans for around $558,000\ufeffAUD in the inaugural 2023 auction, understood the decision by the English quartet.<\/p>\n

"I can probably \ufeffspeak on behalf of a lot of people that they'd love to play for their country as much as possible and it is unfortunate there are schedule clashes," she said ahead of Australia's second ODI clash against South Africa.<\/p>\n

"It's a tough one, obviously the other side of the WPL is the money and you have to think about that as well. You need to be able to set up your life after cricket and that's certainly brought upon that and players are getting paid really good money."<\/p>\n

Australia has managed to escape any scheduling drama\ufeff but the 26-year-old believes those dramas may be unavoidable in the future.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately the scheduling around that is annoying and \ufeffwe hope that doesn't happen again … (but) it could," Gardner said.<\/p>\n

"I know for me that I would always love to play for my country first but I guess you have to look at the bigger picture and sometimes you have to think about other things.<\/p>\n

"Obviously those players have had to have lengthy discussions about what's best for them and the preparation for their tour and missing games for your country is certainly something you don't want to do.<\/p>\n

"I guess with the men's space there's so much cricket on at the moment that ultimately it will clash at times and I guess that's where the women's game is going, we're playing so much cricket at the moment that there's only 12 months in the year.<\/p>\n

"It's going to clash at one point and that's just unfortunate but it's the realistic nature of where the game's going."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
