L\ufeffatrell Mitchell<\/a> has declared he will prove himself as the NRL's best fullback this season, putting to bed a "mentally draining" 12 months with the Rabbitohs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The game's most marketable \ufeffand polarising star endured a tough year on and off the field, struggling with a calf injury and missing the entire State of Origin<\/a> series, as well as battling a court case alongside close mate Jack Wighton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But with all of those issues hopefully in the rear-view mirror, Mitchell is now at a crucial juncture of his career and will be the \ufeffvital to South Sydney's title hopes.<\/p>\n

Speaking to 9news Sydney ahead of the side's trip to Las Vegas for the season opener against Manly, the 26-year-old admitted last year was among the toughest of his life\ufeff, leading to speculation about his NRL future.<\/p>\n

\"Latrell<\/p>\n

"Yeah 100 per cent [it was]," Mitchell said.<\/p>\n

"I just think mentally it was definitely draining. It was getting to a point where rugby league wasn't enjoyable. It was a conversation I had to have with my family and see where I was at in life and if I could potentially keep doing this.<\/p>\n

"Is it fun anymore? Can I keep putting up with people? It is what it is, but I couldn't go out of this game knowing that I didn't go out on my own terms."<\/p>\n

The two-time premiership winner has had a rollercoaster run at Redfern since arriving in 2020, missing consecutive finals series due to injury and suspension – including the club's narrow grand final loss to the Panthers.<\/p>\n

But after finding success and cementing himself as the world's best centre during his time at the Roosters, he believes it's time to push his case as the No.1 fullback in the competition ahead of Reece Walsh, Kalyn Ponga\ufeff and James Tedesco.<\/p>\n

"It's time to grit the teeth and have a crack now," Mitchell said.<\/p>\n

"I just want to do my part at fullback and show everyone that I'm the best fullback in the game and go from there."<\/p>\n
