Collingwood<\/a>'s Brayden Maynard<\/a>'s smother attempt on Demon Angus Brayshaw<\/a> will be ruled differently in 2024 and beyond, according to the AFL's new rulings released on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The league has made a change to the smother rule i\ufeffn response to the Pies premiership player's controversial bump on Melbourne midfielder Angus Brayshaw during the 2023 qualifying final.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the time, Maynard was cleared of any wrongdoing<\/a> and spared a season-ending suspension after an attempt to smother left Brayshaw unconscious for several minutes during the Magpies' seven-point qualifying final victory, which eventually saw his side go on to win the grand final.\ufeff<\/p>\n

But come this year, Maynard would be unlikely to get off.<\/p>\n

The AFL confirmed on Tuesday that \ufeffthey've made "substantive" changes to the smother rule amongst others in order to protect players.<\/p>\n

If a player chooses to leave the ground to smother the ball, \ufeff"any reasonably foreseeable high contact with an opponent that is at least "low impact" will be deemed to be "careless' at a minimum", unless the player has attempted to "minimise the force" of high contact.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the league has shown its support for head protection, tweaking the "run down" tackle ruling for 2024.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"An area of concern in 2023 was instances of run-down tackles where the tackling player significantly contributed to the force with which the tackled player is driven to ground that were not sanctioned.<\/p>\n

"The AFL has amended the guidelines to state that there may be types of run-down tackles that are dangerous and which constitute a reportable offence," the league said.<\/p>\n

The league indicated that "run down tackles where the tackled player is driven into the ground with excessive force" would count as an offence that would come under fire.<\/p>\n

Players will also be further deterred to strike this season, with the AFL adapting a ruling that will grade certain hits as "intentional rather than careless".<\/p>\n

These would include when a player seeks "to fend and push their opponent" or "where a player intends to forcefully push or fend an opposition player off the ball (including to gain separation for the purpose of contesting the ball)" that causes a "strike".<\/p>\n

Among the new bump rule, the league has opted to remain with four players on the interchange, despite a push from coaches to change it to five.<\/p>\n

However, the sub won't need to be named until an hour before matches begin. It means coaches can name a squad of 23 instead of 22\ufeff.<\/p>\n

That will allow clubs to name 23 players in their squad, and avoid having to name just 22, and omit a player who may end up playing as the sub.<\/p>\n

"In an amendment to the announcement of teams, clubs will now name an extended interchange bench of five players and three emergency players," the league said.<\/p>\n

The Commission also detailed the "minor amendment" they'll bring in to "prohibit whistling from the interchange bench", after<\/p>\n

"This change is a result of excessive whistling from club officials on the interchange bench," the AFL confirmed.<\/p>\n
