The Sydney Swans<\/a> have broken with their recent tradition of co-captains, naming Callum Mills<\/a> as the standalone leader for the 2024 season.<\/p>\n

It means that his former co-captains Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, who Mills has led alongside since 2022, will no longer stand at the top.<\/p>\n

The decision comes after Mills' troubled off season, headlined by a freak injury during Mad Monday drinks<\/a>, \ufeffthat led to shoulder surgery, after reportedly wrestling a teammate.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old required off season surgery at the end of last year on a rotator cuff in his shoulder<\/a> as a result of the incident.<\/p>\n

Mills has admitted that the new role – which sees him become just the third solo captain for the Swans since 2005\ufeff after Josh Kennedy in 2017-2018 – is something he will take on with pride, but knows he still has a long way to go.<\/p>\n

"I have thoroughly enjoyed co-captaining with Dane and Luke, their leadership has shaped the club to what it is today, and I will still be learning from them going forward," Mills said in a club statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

"It's an absolute honour to captain this club. I grew up as a Swans supporter and am a proud New South Welshman, so having the opportunity to lead this great club is not lost on me."<\/p>\n

Back in October of 2023, Mills came out and apologised about the Mad Monday incident.<\/p>\n

It was just weeks after the Swans were bundled out of the finals in the elimination final to Carlton<\/a> by just six points.<\/p>\n

"As I said, I made a bad mistake," Mills told media in October.<\/p>\n

"As soon as I found the results, I went into (coach John Longmire's) office and told him exactly what happened, and as you can imagine, he was extremely disappointed, as am I in myself.<\/p>\n

"It was extremely hard, but that's the respect I have for Horse (Longmire), to be able to own it and take full responsibility.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Flash forward four months and Longmire has thrown his full support behind Mills taking on the job at the top alone.<\/p>\n

"We feel as though the time is right for Callum to be the sole captain and lead the group going forward," Longmire said.<\/p>\n

"I want to personally thank Ramps and Parks for playing important roles as co-captains of this football club, and I and the playing group will still be leaning on them for guidance going forward."<\/p>\n

Mills, who has already played 155 games for the Swans since being drafted in 2015, is an All-Australian, a club best and fairest and has signed on a mega deal until 2029.<\/p>\n
