There's a new contender for the second seat at Red Bull<\/a>, according to a former F1<\/a> team manager turned journalist.<\/p>\n

Peter Windsor, who worked with Williams and Ferrari<\/a> in the 1980s, has tipped Alex Albon to join the team in 2025 in place of Sergio Perez<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Perez, who only has one year left on his current contract, has been lacking relative to his three-time world championship-winning teammate Max Verstappen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> and Liam Lawson are among the favourites to take that seat should Red Bull decide not to extend Perez's contract.<\/p>\n

However, the resurgence of Albon at Williams could see him become a contender to make a triumphant return to the team that sacked him only a few years ago.<\/p>\n

"As I understand it, Albon has been offered a three-year contract to start in 2025," said Windsor about a return to Red Bull.<\/p>\n

"So I think you're going to see him alongside Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. I can't imagine he's going to say no to that. From what I understand, that's 90 per cent."<\/p>\n

After finishing third in the 2018 Formula 2 season, Albon was jettisoned into the then-known Scuderia Toro Rosso for the 2019 Formula 1 season.<\/p>\n

He scored points in only his second race and was promoted to Red Bull mid-season in place of the underperforming Pierre Gasly.<\/p>\n

Albon finished eight of the nine races inside the top six thereafter and cemented his place at Red Bull for 2020.<\/p>\n

Albon scored two podiums in his first full season with Red Bull but was dropped in favour of Perez for 2021.<\/p>\n

The Thai driver sat out the 2021 season before joining Williams in 2022, the worst team in F1 at the time.<\/p>\n

In just his third race with the team, he scored points with a bold strategy to run most of the race on the same set of tyres before pitting just shy of the finish.<\/p>\n

He scored two more points finishes that year on his way to 19th in the drivers' championship with four points.<\/p>\n

Albon more than doubled his point-scoring finishes in 2023, racking up seven and a total of 27 points to finish 13th in the championship.<\/p>\n

Albon has been supported by former Mercedes motorsport strategy director James Vowles, who moved to Williams in 2023.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
