Chinese speed skater Yang Jingru left commentators, camera operators, and her rival competitors stunned at the Winter Youth Olympic<\/a> Games with a cunning strategy that earned her gold.<\/p>\n

It's been two weeks since the moment but it's since risen to prominence on social media after a TikTok gathered more than 22.5 million views.<\/p>\n

In an unconventional tactic, Yang opted to leave the pack of speed skaters and sprint away to an early lead. She almost lapped the field, tagging onto the back of the group.<\/p>\n

As the laps wore down, Yang's rivals hadn't twigged to play catch up and instead only paid attention to the bell as it sounded to signal the final lap.<\/p>\n

Yang crossed the line in the lead to win gold while her rivals slowed at the finish line not realising they still had a lap to go \u2013 all except her Chinese teammate who kept racing.<\/p>\n

Li Jinzi crossed the line to take silver and she duly celebrated with Yang.<\/p>\n

In the viral TikTok, Arielle Schmidt noted that even the camera operators were confused.<\/p>\n

"Two laps to go. Remember first place is here, freaking chilling in the back," Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

"And then you hear final lap, there's a bell that goes off, so now everyone's thinking 'final lap'.<\/p>\n

"Are they still thinking final lap? Do they know it's not their final lap? They dive, she dove, there's first!<\/p>\n

"She just finished in first, the cameraman stopped \u2014 the cameraman thought the race was over."<\/p>\n

Yang spoke to CGTN about the move that she said she had never thought to try before.<\/p>\n

"It was a daring move, one I had never attempted before," Yang said.<\/p>\n

"But it was my own strategy, a secret weapon nobody saw coming. It left everyone bewildered and unsure of how to respond. And it worked like a charm \u2026<\/p>\n

"I achieved what I had set out to do. My goal was to claim the gold medal, and I'm pleased that I was able to turn that vision into a reality."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
