The Sheffield Shield<\/a> has become the latest cricket competition involved in a spirit debate, after NSW<\/a> batter Chris Green was given not out for obstructing the field.<\/p>\n

Late on day two in the match between Western Australia<\/a> and NSW at the WACA, Green left his crease after defending a ball back to quick Charlie Stobo, who then had a throw at the stumps.<\/p>\n

Green used his bat to defend the ball away, prompting an appeal from Stobo and WA skipper Sam Whiteman.<\/p>\n

As WA asked the question of umpires Ben Treloar and Nathan Johnstone, one of the commentators was in disbelief the thought of an appeal was even being entertained.<\/p>\n

"You can't. Don't appeal that. Don't start this \u2026 don't stoop to this," he said.<\/p>\n

Under the rules of cricket, a batter can be given out obstructing the field if they deliberately play at the ball with either their bat or hands in defence of their stumps, which Green clearly did.<\/p>\n

"He's half a step outside the crease so probably strictly speaking, he is out obstructing the field if he's using his bat to defend his stumps when he's standing out of his crease," the second commentator said.<\/p>\n

"It's interesting the umpires have decided not to give it out \u2013 Sam Whiteman wasn't interested in withdrawing the appeal."<\/p>\n

Side-on replays showed Green was still well out of his crease when he hit the ball a second time, and the ball would have come close to hitting leg stump had he not defended it.<\/p>\n

The rules also state Green probably did not need to use his bat to defend the ball, given he did not need to move to block the stumps.<\/p>\n

A batter can't be given out obstructing the field if they are standing their ground.<\/p>\n

WA coach A\ufeffdam Voges confirmed he had asked the referee for a please explain.<\/p>\n

"I'm waiting to hear from the match referee as to what the interpretation was," he said after play.<\/p>\n

"I've asked the question, I just haven't got an answer yet."<\/p>\n

It's the third spirit of cricket incident in the last week, and the second in the space of 24 hours.<\/p>\n

England 'keeper Ben Foakes could have brought the end of England's first Test against India<\/a> earlier had he timed his stumping attempt on Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah better.<\/p>\n

Bumrah was not attempting a run when Foakes attempted to stump Bumrah as he jumped to return to his feet.<\/p>\n

Then on Saturday night (AEDT), the England under 19 World Cup side was on the receiving end when No.4 Hamza Sheik was given out obstructing after picking up a stationary ball and giving it to the Zimbabwean 'keeper<\/a>.<\/p>\n
