Jason Day<\/a> was denied what would have been a Pebble Beach Pro-Am<\/a> tournament \ufeffrecord-equalling round by a lipped out putt on the 18th hole.<\/p>\n

In cold, wet and miserable conditions, Day \ufeffstarted the third round at four-under but shot into contention with four-straight birdies in his first four holes.<\/p>\n

A bogey at the par-three fifth was only a minor speed bump. He birdied the par-five sixth, and then recorded three more birdies and an eagle on the back nine to shoot 63.<\/p>\n

On the 18th, he \ufeffhad about 10m for eagle to become the fourth player in the event's history to shoot a 62.<\/p>\n

Speaking after his round, Day said the slow greens as a result of the wet conditions meant the opportunity was there to shoot a low score, even with the strong winds.<\/p>\n

"I've been really struggling with my speed of the putts, especially from that distance," Day said.<\/p>\n

"(But) the way that the conditions were today, the way that the course setup was, if you're hitting your drives down the middle and you've got really good spin control … you definitely have a good opportunity of shooting a really low one," he said.<\/p>\n

As it turns out, it wouldn't have mattered if Day made the putt. A few groups behind him, US Open champion Wyndham Clark was setting the course on fire.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Clark carded two eagles, nine birdies and a lone bogey to shoot a 60 and s\ufefftand alone with the course record.<\/p>\n

Clark sits at 13-under for the tournament, \ufeffa shot clear of Ludvig Aberg on top of the leaderboard. Day is four behind in a four-way tie for sixth.<\/p>\n

There was some luck involved though – the lone bogey in Clark's round at the \ufeffpar-3 12th could easily have been a double or worse.<\/p>\n

His tee shot plugged in a bunker. He could only blast that to the collar of another bunker, and was forced to play his third shot wrong-handed. The ball squirted across the green into the rough still about 8m from the hole.<\/p>\n

Miraculously, the putt dropped and he walked off with a four.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, of any of the putts today that I was not really trying to make it was that one,\u201d Clark admitted.<\/p>\n

"I really was just focused on my speed and just trying to get it down there, two putt, get the double, go to the next hole and move on.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor that to go in, it was like, \u2018All right, man, I\u2019m hot'.\u201d<\/p>\n

With severe weather forecast overnight, there is significant doubt about whether or not the final round will even take place.<\/p>\n

Rain began to fall over the final few holes, and the heavy stuff was anticipated overnight on a course already saturated. Of equal concern was ferocious wind, with gusts anticipated to be north of 100km\/h.<\/p>\n

Gary Young, the chief referee for the PGA Tour, said officials would decide before dawn whether the final round would have to be delayed, and then whether any golf could be played.<\/p>\n

If they determine the event cannot finish on Monday, the event will be called after 54-holes, the leaderboard after this third round the final standings.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The last 54-hole event on the PGA Tour was in 2016. The last one at Pebble Beach was 2009.<\/p>\n

Clark admitted the forecast was on his mind throughout his round.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\u201cI definitely thought about it last night and this morning with everyone saying how bad the weather\u2019s going to be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou've got to have that mentality that today\u2019s the last day so try to go for broke. With that said, that\u2019s very rare that we have 54 holes, so I wasn\u2019t banking on that and I\u2019m still not banking on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aberg has played bogey-free for two days at Pebble Beach. He had his chances to catch Clark but missed birdie putts on the 14th and 16th.<\/p>\n

Matthieu Pavon of France, a winner last week at Torrey Pines, birdied his last hole for a 66 and was alone in third place.<\/p>\n
