In a huge show of faith, new Dragons <\/a>coach Anthony Griffin has handed the captaincy to Ben Hunt for the 2021 season<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hunt replaces the departing Cameron McInnes, who suffered an ACL injury days after announcing he was joining rivals Cronulla next season.<\/a><\/p>\n

"It's a massive privilege to be named captain of this historic club. It is a responsibility I won't be taking lightly," Hunt told the Dragons website.<\/p>\n

"The last few seasons haven't been what has come to be expected of St George Illawarra. I'm focused on leading the Dragons back to where they belong in this competition as premiership heavyweights.<\/p>\n

"I'm blessed to be surrounded by fantastic support networks, both personally and throughout the organisation and I can't wait to repay the faith that has been shown in me with this honour."<\/p>\n

Hunt has been heavily criticised since his multi-million dollar move from Brisbane, and was dropped as halfback last year to play hooker. Yet the surprise call is another sign Griffin has plenty of confidence in the playmaker. <\/p>\n

Hunt played at the Broncos when Griffin was in charge between 2011 and 2014. Tariq Sims, Zac Lomax and Andrew McCullough were also considered for the position. <\/p>\n

The addition of McCullough at hooker rekindles the Brisbane connection with Hunt and the former coach, who said the halfback was the ideal candidate for the role.<\/p>\n

"Ben wanted this role for all the right reasons. His care factor for the club is extremely high and the added responsibility will be crucial to his ongoing performances," Griffin said.<\/p>\n

"The captaincy is a fantastic opportunity at this stage of his career and is a testament to his character and Ben as a person.<\/p>\n

"This extra accountability will push him to continue being one of the competition's best halfbacks."<\/p>\n
