Manly Sea Eagles<\/a> coach Anthony Seibold<\/a> has dispelled rumours that second-rower Josh Schuster is not fit to play in the NRL season opener in Las Vegas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to a report from The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>, the 22-year-old may be unable to make the trip to the States having not trained with Manly for the past eight weeks.<\/p>\n

Schuster was struck down with chickenpox before the Christmas break before suffering a broken \ufefffinger which required surgery last month.<\/p>\n

A fresh calf strain has also limited Schuster's ability to train with the main group.<\/p>\n

Speaking to 2GB's Wide World of Sport<\/em><\/a>, Seibold claimed Schuster's circumstances had "been misrepresented in the media".<\/p>\n

"Josh had a \ufefffantastic pre-Christmas period," he said.<\/p>\n

"[Schuster] and a couple of our staff members got chickenpox … in the last week before Christmas so that hurt Josh's last week of training.<\/p>\n

"Then down in Canberra \ufeffat our pre-season camp, he broke his finger \u2014 it was a spiral fracture. He needed an operation on that which he got straightaway.<\/p>\n

"He was able to train, he just wasn't able to join the skills\ufeff. So, he's been training.<\/p>\n

\"Vegas-bound<\/p>\n

"\ufeffHe did have a bit of a hiccup on Monday, his calf tightened up, but we expect him to play in our second trial, the first NRL pre-season game against the Roosters in a couple of weeks time.<\/p>\n

"So, he's working towards being in that group\ufeff that goes over to Vegas."<\/p>\n

Because of the unfortunate nature of Schuster's situation, Seibold labelled \ufeffthe claims that Schuster is unfit or directionless as "unfair".<\/p>\n

"\ufeffHe's a hardworking kid that cares about his game," he said.<\/p>\n

"I'm disappointed that it gets represented that he's not fit enough or he hasn't trained for eight weeks. It's just not the case.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe'll get Shuey back on the park as soon as we can and he's had a good pre-season in that edge back-rower position."<\/p>\n

With Schuster's calf tightness, Seibold explained that the team was being conservative.<\/p>\n

Schuster was limited to just 15 first-grade appearances in 2023, having spent extended periods on the sidelines with injury and fitness issues.<\/p>\n

After a breakout season in 2021, Schuster's lack of game time has been a major concern for the club, who have spent an incredible amount of time and money on the five-eighth turned back-rower \u2014 signing him to a lucrative extension heading into this season.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Sea Eagles took on the Dragons<\/a> in an opposed training session on Friday, with Manly the clear standout of the two clubs.<\/p>\n

Luke Brooks stepped out in Manly colours for the first time while Tom Trbojevic and Daley Cherry-Evans also featured.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffDoing a scrimmage with the Dragons was almost like a game in some ways so it was really good," Seibold said afterwards.<\/p>\n

"We got a lot out of it \ufeffas did the Dragons."<\/p>\n

\ufeffManly will take 24 players to Vegas for their round-one clash against South Sydney.<\/p>\n
