There are countless stories of stillborn Formula 1<\/a> cars that have never raced.<\/p>\n

In almost every instance, it's because teams shut their doors after running out of money.<\/p>\n

In the case of aspirant F1 team Andretti Global, the team has built a model of a 2024-specification car with the intention that it will never race.<\/p>\n

Even though the team hasn't got the final approval to race, work is already underway towards an eventual debut, either in 2025 or 2026.<\/p>\n

The FIA gave the Cadillac Andretti team the green light in October last year but more boxes need to be ticked by Formula 1 and its CEO Stefano Domenicali.<\/p>\n

Toyota has lent Andretti Global its wind tunnel in Cologne, Germany where the model has been tested.<\/p>\n

There's a method to their madness. Although the model will never be made into a fully-fledged F1 car, it will allow the team to research and develop a car based on the current regulations in the event they're approved to race.<\/p>\n

"We're effectively trying to develop with a current car and learn lessons with that geometry, and how we derive more performance out of it," the team's technical director Nick Chester told Motorsport.com.<\/p>\n

"But also to try and improve our throughput from concept, CFD, tunnel, results viewing back to CFD. So we're trying to improve processes, and develop a '24 car."<\/p>\n

In any case, the team is confident it will be given the go-ahead to race \u2013 spending millions on research and development would suggest as much.<\/p>\n

Chester admits he'd like to know whether they'll race in 2025 or 2026, though that won't have a huge impact on their progress.<\/p>\n

"I think obviously we'd prefer to have the formal entry and a target year for that bit of focus," said Chester.<\/p>\n

"But I think we were very happy with the process we went through with the FIA.<\/p>\n

"It was very rigorous, and we ticked all the boxes. And we're heads down trying to push on to have a competitive car ready for whatever year the entry becomes.<\/p>\n

"I think everyone's reasonably confident given the funding, the Andretti name, the tie-up with GM, GM doing their own power unit for '28, that it should happen.<\/p>\n

"I think the nice thing is it's a group of people who are completely on the same page and really enjoying growing a new team. And that makes it a lot of fun, and makes it exciting."<\/p>\n

If Andretti's bid doesn't get off the ground, they'll join a long list of dead-in-the-water designs.<\/p>\n

Toyota famously built a car for the 2010 season before the Japanese manufacturer pulled funding for the F1 program.<\/p>\n

One of the most iconic resurrections was Honda's program. In similar circumstances to Toyota, Honda pulled out of F1 and the team was acquired and rebranded as Brawn in 2009.<\/p>\n

The team shoehorned a Mercedes engine into the chassis and its famous double diffuser took them to an unlikely F1 drivers' championship.<\/p>\n
