J\ufeffannik Sinner<\/a> became a grand slam winner for the first time at the Australian Open<\/a> – and according to his coach Darren Cahill<\/a>, there was a hint of AFL<\/a> flavour to the victory.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old made the career breakthrough on Sunday night, defeating Daniil Medvedev<\/a> in an epic encounter, coming back from \ufefftwo sets down in the final on Rod Laver Arena.<\/p>\n

Sinner has been lauded for his performances throughout the two-week tournament, which saw him knock off world No.1 Novak Djokovic on his road to the decider against Medvedev.<\/p>\n

But what many didn't expect to hear was that a secret ingredient to Sinner's success came from a sport he has likely never watched, with Cahill telling 9News of the influence Aussie rules has on his successful coaching style.<\/p>\n

"Most of my coaching is really based around football philosophy, not so much tennis philosophy," Cahill – an Aussie – said.<\/p>\n

"That's kind of the way I play the game. My experience is what I grew up with – I grew up around the Port Adelaide football club and being exposed to my dad, not just as a player but mostly as a coach, and being around some of the legends of the club.<\/p>\n

"Most of the friends that I have are still involved in football."<\/p>\n

One of the friends that Cahill alluded to is Mark Williams, who was spotted in the coach's box during Sinner's showdown with Medvedev<\/a> and across the entire fortnight at Melbourne Park.<\/p>\n

Cahill has now helped guide four grand slam winners during his coaching career, spanning back over two decades with Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi and Simona Halep.<\/p>\n

But his most recent efforts with the popular Italian star will always hold a special place in the 58-year-old's heart.<\/p>\n

"They are all really special for different reasons – this was right up there for sure," Cahill said.<\/p>\n

"It's really good and everyone works well together.<\/p>\n

"I'm the outsider in this full-Italian team, but they've welcome me with open arms and it's been a pleasure to work with him."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
