The Rebels will compete in Super Rugby \ufeffthis year but their future beyond that is uncertain after the cash strapped Melbourne club entered voluntary administration on Monday night.<\/p>\n

Rugby Australia said it would now work \ufeffwith the appointed administrator to ensure the Rebels are on the field for Super Rugby Pacific and Super W in 2024.<\/p>\n

"RA is committed to ensuring the Melbourne Rebels play in the 2024 Super Rugby competitions, and we will support their preparation for the new season," RA chief executive Phil Waugh said.<\/p>\n

The continued support – or otherwise – from the Victorian government now shapes as critical to the club's survival.<\/p>\n

The Rebels have played in Super Rugby since 2011 but have struggled to consistently win games or draw big crowds.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The Victorian government has been a long standing and significant supporter of professional and community rugby," Waugh said.<\/p>\n

"Through our strong partnership \u2013 forged through decades of staging major events in Melbourne \u2013 our focus is to work with the Victorian government and its key agencies, including Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust, to ensure the Rebels' participation in the 2024 Super Rugby season and the continuation of professional rugby in the state."<\/p>\n

The prospect of merging with the ACT Brumbies \ufeffhas often been touted but met with resistance from the Canberra club.<\/p>\n

"Our focus as an organisation is to ensure we can deliver the 2024 season, perform well in the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific and Super Rugby women's competitions, and to position our club in the best possible way for the future," Rebels chief executive Baden Stephenson said.<\/p>\n
