Moments after Australian teen sprinter Torrie Lewis burst over the finish line on Saturday<\/a>, she was told she'd broken a record.<\/p>\n

When the 19-year-old found out exactly which 100m record she'd broken, she was stunned.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"When I heard there was a record broken, my first thought was it was just the [Australian women's] under-20 record, which was like 11.20 [seconds], but then everyone was just like, 'It was the open record, like the big one'," Lewis explained on Nine's Today<\/em> on Monday.<\/p>\n

In a scorching run at the ACT Championships, Lewis stopped the clock at 11.10 (+1.6) to eclipse the national record by 0.01 of a second.<\/p>\n

The previous national record holder, Melissa Breen, had posted 11.11 (+1.9) at the same meet in 2014.<\/p>\n

The record Lewis initially thought she'd broken was the great Raelene Boyle's under-20 record of 11.20, set at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"All the work is done behind the scenes and then\ufeff at the competition you've just got to try to run how you do in training," Lewis said.<\/p>\n

"But I just wasn't expecting it at all … It was such a big surprise."<\/p>\n

Lewis smashed her personal best\ufeff of 11.23 (+0.5). She even broke her "all conditions" personal best of 11.18, assisted by an illegal wind of +3.8 (metres per second).<\/p>\n

The Queenslander made a breakthrough in her promising career last year, making her first senior Australian team when she was selected for the World Athletics Championships, held in Budapest.<\/p>\n

She also won the sprint double at last year's Australian Track and Field Championships in Brisbane, blitzing the 100m and 200m.<\/p>\n

She's aiming to compete at the Paris Olympics in August, as well as the\ufeff World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru later in the month.<\/p>\n

Lewis was asked on Today<\/em> how fast she could get.<\/p>\n

"Hopefully I'll break 11 seconds,\ufeff so sub-11," she said, beaming with excitement and crossing her fingers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
