D\ufeffaniil Medvedev<\/a> expects to feel "dead for a week" after his marathon run at the Australian Open<\/a> ended with a loss to Jannik Sinner<\/a> on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

With \ufeffSinner's 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 victory<\/a>, the tournament equalled the most five-set matches in the open era with 35 going the distance across the 15 days, a record first set at the US Open in 1983.<\/p>\n

Over his seven matches\ufeff, Medvedev spent a record 24 hours and 17 minutes on court to become the first player to surpass a full day of play in a single grand slam.<\/p>\n

\"Medvedev\"<\/p>\n

With \ufefffour five-set matches that at times stretched until the early hours of the morning, Medvedev said he now intended to take it easy over the next few days.<\/p>\n

"Five-setters are tough for the body," he told media post-match.<\/p>\n

"During the matches, every time it was the same story \u2014 after two sets, my energy level dropped because I didn't have a perfect sleep, it was so hot.<\/p>\n

"Let's call it my fault because I needed to win easier matches, but sometimes it's tough.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt's not easy for the body, but at least I feel like I have no injuries. Some blisters, which is unfortunate, which is rare for me, but whatever, it's going to go away."<\/p>\n

Medvedev was gifted his first-round victory via a retirement from Terence Atmane before staging \ufeffa two-sets-to-love comeback against Finnish player Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"The only thing I had left to stay in the tournament and be happy to be in the final, I had to win the match. We had to go the five sets," Medvedev said.<\/p>\n

The third seed then \ufeffprevailed over Felix Auger-Aliassime and Nuno Borges before an epic quarter-final showing against Hubert Hurkacz and a semi final against Alexander Zverev<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"It's crazy, I would say the worst I felt was after the Hurkacz match, the day after, and after Zverev's match, the day after.<\/p>\n

"[On Saturday] when I was in practice, I was like, 'Damn, how I'm going to play the final, how am going to move?'.<\/p>\n

"We really worked hard with my physio especially, he did a tremendous job so every time when I stepped on court, I was ready again."<\/p>\n

Asked if this campaign Down Under had been the most taxing tournament he had played in, Medvedev did not need long to think.<\/p>\n

\"Daniil<\/p>\n

"Oh yeah, by far. It's unbelievable," he said.<\/p>\n

"As I said, after [the match against Zverev] I went to bed at 5am.<\/p>\n

"[I've] never had this late, such a late sleep time. Crazy.<\/p>\n

"When you go to sleep really late the next day you feel horrible, and then you try to recover for the next day.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Heading into the decider, Sinner had only dropped one set across the entire tournament.<\/p>\n

As a result, the young Italian had spent five hours and 49 minutes less on court than Medvedev\ufeff and that appeared to take its toll in the end.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's better to come like Jannik, losing one set [on the way] to the final, but sometimes you don't have another choice," Medvedev said.<\/p>\n

With this in mind, \ufeffthe five-time slam finalist started the match aggressively and was rewarded with a two-sets-to-love advantage before things went awry in the third set.<\/p>\n

"That's the only thing I ask myself, 'Did I keep this aggression or lose it in the third?'," Medvedev said.<\/p>\n

"Even if I lost [my aggression], I would connect it to my physical level, which is better than mental level, if you, I don't know, become scared and try to retain the ball a little.<\/p>\n

"In my mind, I was still going full but my body was a little bit worse.<\/p>\n

"Jannik right now, he can play long rallies, he can stay there. If I was 100 per cent fresh physically, maybe with my coach we could decide before the match, 'Look, I'm going to get into these rallies and let's see who is stronger physically'.<\/p>\n

\"Australian<\/p>\n

"But I knew that I was not in the shape, so I needed to make the points as short as possible. I knew there was still going to be long points but I needed to make the points as short as possible, take his time, and it was working well.<\/p>\n

"To be honest, I think it was working well until the end. I still had a breakpoint in the fourth set, he made an ace but I didn't choose the right side.<\/p>\n
