J\ufeffannik Sinner<\/a> gave a heartfelt tribute to his parents Johann and Siglinde after claiming his maiden grand slam victory at the Australian Open<\/a> on Sunday night \u2014 even though they weren't in the crowd.<\/p>\n

Even after progressing past the semi-final stage of a major for the first time in his career with a stunning victory over Novak Djokovic<\/a>, \ufeffSinner's parents did not travel to Melbourne for the final \u2014 instead cheering on their son from home in Italy.<\/p>\n

But after hoisting the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup following his 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Daniil Medvedev<\/a>, the young Italian thanked his parents for giving him the independence to play whichever sport he wanted.<\/p>\n

\"Jannik<\/p>\n

A champion alpine skier in his youth, Sinner balanced giant slalom and tennis before deciding to pour all his energy into pursuing professional tennis at age 13.<\/p>\n

"I wish that everyone could have my parents because they always let me choose whatever I want to do, even when I was younger," Sinner said in his acceptance speech.<\/p>\n

"I did some other sports and they never put pressure on myself and I wish that this freedom is possible for as many young kids as possible so thank you so much for my parents.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Sinner was also grateful to his parents for permitting him to leave home as a child to chase his dream.<\/p>\n

"I went away from home when I was 14 years old so I had to grow up quite fast," he told media on Sunday.<\/p>\n

"For me, that was tough but for my parents to leave their son at 14 years old, it's also not easy.<\/p>\n

\"Sinner\"<\/p>\n

"They always gave me everything, and they never put pressure on myself, which for me is maybe the key to why I'm here.<\/p>\n

"They are the perfect parents. Obviously I know only them but they are awesome."<\/p>\n

Speaking post-match, one-half of Sinner's coaching staff Simone Vagnozzi\ufeff said it was refreshing to deal with the world No.4's parents who have adopted a relaxed approach to tennis.<\/p>\n

"If we have to speak about parents, the parents of Jannik are wonderful, really wonderful," he said.<\/p>\n

"Sometimes they come to the tournaments but they do not speak one word about tennis.<\/p>\n

"They are just there, they enjoy the life of the tournament but never come to us and say, 'Oh, you know, the serve, well, you know, this, you know, the break point'.<\/p>\n

\"Sinner\"<\/p>\n

"Right now it's not easy to find those kind of families because, with YouTube, everyone is a coach, especially in Italy. So, we are really lucky."<\/p>\n

Vagnozzi also recognised what role models Sinner's parents are for the 22-year-old.<\/p>\n

"The education that Jannik has \u2014 you saw every day on court. The racquet never went down one time," he said.<\/p>\n

"I think for the Italian it's really a really good example to have."<\/p>\n

This was echoed by\ufeff Sinner's other coach, Australian coach Darren Cahill<\/a><\/p>\n

"[Like] what you see with Jannik off the court, he is incredibly respectful on the court," he said.<\/p>\n

\"Jannik<\/p>\n

"Whether it be to the umpires or the ballkids or lines people or anybody around \u2014 the transport drivers, the people at the restaurants, he's been brought up really well and he's got his feet on the ground.<\/p>\n

"His parents are exactly the same as him. His dad's got that goofy smile that Jannik has."<\/p>\n

Sinner's parents work together at a restaurant at the Talschlusshutte ski resort in Sesto meaning he does not see them all that often.<\/p>\n

His father is a chef while his mother is a waitress.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe're a little bit sad they couldn't be here but it's such a long way to come from Italy for the semis or the final and you never quite know," Cahill said.<\/p>\n

"And I think they believe in jinxing a little bit, you know, they don't want to get on the plane and come and ruin the mojo or everything."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
