England<\/a> wicketkeeper Ben Foakes' bungled attempt at a match-winning stumping against India<\/a> surely avoided a fresh sprit of the game debate.<\/p>\n

England shocked the hosts by overcoming a 190-run first innings deficit to record a 28-run win<\/a> in the first Test in Hyderabad, largely thanks to a stunning second-innings 196 from Ollie Pope.<\/p>\n

But the tourists could have wrapped the match up sooner if the timing of Foakes' stumping attempt was better.<\/p>\n

With India nine down and still needing 43 runs to win, Jasprit Bumrah attempted to hoick debutant spinner Tom Hartley onto the leg side.<\/p>\n

He missed, and Foakes took the ball cleanly, before holding his hand near the stumps apparently waiting for Bumrah to leave his crease.<\/p>\n

The Indian tailender then jumped to get back to his feet, which is when Foakes whipped the bails off.<\/p>\n

Replays showed Bumrah's foot was back on the ground when the bails came off, and he was given not out by the third umpire.<\/p>\n

While commentators brushed over the moment, social media was quick to draw comparisons to the controversial Alex Carey incident during last year's Ashes.<\/p>\n

Carey copped significant backlash from the English press for his stumping of Jonny Bairstow during the second Test at Lord's.<\/p>\n

At the time, England skipper Ben Stokes said he wouldn't want to win a match in that manner, but that's exactly what would've happened had Foakes' timing been better.<\/p>\n

Coincidentally, it was a stumping \u2013 the second of the innings \u2013 that eventually ended the match when Mohammed Siraj had a brain fade and charged down the wicket at Hartley, who finished with figures of 7-62 from 26.2 overs in his first Test appearance.<\/p>\n

Chasing 231 to win, India slumped to 7-119 before KS Bharat and Ravichandran Ashwin put on 57 for the eighth wicket to bring the hosts back into contention.<\/p>\n

But it was Hartley who came to the rescue, breaking the partnership with a ripping leg break that spun past Bharat's outside edge and smacked his off stump.<\/p>\n
