D\ufeffaniil Medvedev<\/a> has fallen short for a third time in the Australian Open<\/a> men's final, blowing a two-set lead against Jannik Sinner<\/a> in a dramatic battle on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old looked likely to claim a second grand slam title, but allowed the Italian back into the match and ultimately struggled to maintain his performance in the 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 loss.<\/p>\n

Medvedev played more minutes over the past fortnight than any player in grand slam history and the fatigue was on full-display in the latter stages of the clash, with the youthful Sinner taking full advantage to secure his first major.<\/p>\n

But in a classy moment post-match, Medvedev paid credit to his 22-year-old opponent and earned a loud roar from the Rod Laver Arena crowd after showing pure class in defeat.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"First of all, I want to congratulate Jannik because today, you showed again why you deserve it," he said.<\/p>\n

"You fought until the end, you managed to raise your level. You and your team are doing an amazing job, winning a lot of tournaments.<\/p>\n

"That's probably not your last grand slam and hopefully I can try to get the next one if we play in the final … I'll try my best.<\/p>\n

"It's been an amazing two weeks, it always hurts to lose in the final – but probably being in the final is better than losing before.<\/p>\n

"I always want to win, but I guess I have to try harder next time. I'm going to try even harder next time."<\/p>\n

Medvedev's latest grand slam hiccup earned him an unfortunate slice of history, becoming the first player to lose two separate finals after leading by two sets, with the previous occasion coming two years ago at Melbourne Park against Rafael Nadal.<\/p>\n

And while the disappointment was beginning to set in, Medvedev took time to send a heartfelt message to his wife and daughter.<\/p>\n

"I don't know, maybe they turned off the TV – but Dasha and Alisa, if you're watching, I felt like you were there with me," he said.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately I couldn't make it today, but I'm going to try to make it next time for you."<\/p>\n
