Daniil Medvedev's<\/a> loss to Jannik Sinner in this year's Australian Open<\/a> makes him the only player to twice suffer defeat from two sets to love up in a grand slam final.<\/p>\n

Before this year's final at Rod Laver Arena, there were seven instances of players losing after winning the first two sets.<\/p>\n

In 2022, Medvedev was beaten by Rafael Nadal<\/a>, who famously won 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 at the Australian Open.<\/p>\n

Then, he was something of a villain in the public's eye. He continually complained about crowd noise and often took aim at spectators for their behaviour.<\/p>\n

On the night of the 2022 final, the cheers were loud for Nadal and the jeers were louder for Medvedev.<\/p>\n

Post-match he said there were moments in which "the kid stopped dreaming" and that he played for himself, his family, and supporters.<\/p>\n

Two years later, his image in the public eye is far more positive. Although the cheers were still louder for his opponent, Jannik Sinner, who won 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Asked about the scenes of 2022, the Russian said the circumstances weren't comparable and offered a more philosophical view.<\/p>\n

"Different feeling, different circumstances, I would say. Now I'm dreaming more than ever, probably not today, but in general in life," he explained.<\/p>\n

"But I would say it's not anymore a kid who is dreaming \u2014 it's me, myself, right now, a 27-year-old who is dreaming, and who's doing everything that is possible for my future and for my present.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I love it. That's why I made it to the final. I wanted to win. I was close. Was I really close or not? Tough to say, but was not far. The scoreline is similar but I think the match would be a bit different."<\/p>\n

Asked about the match against Nadal, Medvedev said he tried not to dwell on the glaring similarities between that contest and the latest loss to Sinner.<\/p>\n

"I didn't think much about (the) Rafa match because I really tried to leave it behind, so I don't think it had any issues. Otherwise there would be many, many matches during the season where I would lose," Medvedev explained.<\/p>\n

On that speech from two years ago (video above), Medvedev said he failed to realise the change he wanted to see in himself.<\/p>\n

Rather than bouncing back, he didn't make it past the fourth round in four straight grand slams across 2022 and 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Medvedev said he can have a positive outlook on his career now.<\/p>\n

"I am different," he said.<\/p>\n

"When I was giving my speech, I tried also to give it to myself and to, let's say, change myself and then think less about others and think more about myself, because that's a very important way to feel well and to achieve your dreams and stuff like this.<\/p>\n

"But I actually didn't manage to do it. I actually didn't manage to do it. As I said, probably this loss also didn't help me do it. But now I managed to find this state. I managed to find, to raise this level and become a different person with different mentality.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'm really going to try to make everything possible with myself, with my mind, for this loss to not affect my future tournaments and future seasons, because that's part of sports."<\/p>\n

Medvedev joins Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Guillermo Coria, Andrei Medvedev, John McEnroe and Manuel Orantes as\ufeff one of the unlucky seven to lose in such circumstances.<\/p>\n

Medvedev is none from three in Australian Open final appearances, only second to Andy Murray who never won in his five finals at Melbourne Park.<\/p>\n

On the other side, Sinner joins seven legends of tennis to have come from two sets down to win, including Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi, and Bjorn Borg.<\/p>\n
