West Indies<\/a> legend Ian Bishop has urged the governing bodies to find extra cash to entice young stars like Shamar Joseph to stick with Test cricket<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bishop's comments come at a time the game's purest format faces serious threat from the rise of lucrative Twenty20 leagues around the world\ufeff.<\/p>\n

In recent weeks the Windies and South Africa have opted to send weakened squads abroad to play Test series, raising very real concerns administrators no longer view red-ball cricket \ufeffas the pinnacle of their sport.<\/p>\n

But out of the mire has risen young stars like Joseph, who announced himself as the future of West Indies cricket as he helped the Test team win in Australia for the first time in \ufeff27 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At 24 years old, the talented quick was an unknown quantity ahead of the series.<\/p>\n

Now he's a household name<\/a>, and has declared he's here to stay in red ball cricket despite the T20 riches that are almost certainly on offer.<\/p>\n

After taking 13 wickets in his first two Test matches, the Windies must do everything they can to keep Joseph, says Bishop.<\/p>\n

"Important for the board, Guyana government and corporate bodies to find a way to allocate funds to compensate Shamar Joseph and one or two other fast bowlers to keep them in the Caribbean and control how much cricket they play," Bishop tweeted.<\/p>\n

"Their pace is everything. Don't allow burnout.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Joseph's rise is incredible considering he came from a remote town of Baracara in Guyana where he was logging for a living.<\/p>\n

It's been well documented<\/a> it can take two days to reach the port town of New Amsterdam from Baracara, which can be done only by boat.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Joseph moved to New Amsterdam where he worked in security and lived next door to West Indian cricketer Romario Shepherd.<\/p>\n

Once he attended a Curtly Ambrose fast-bowling clinic, everything went into motion and before he knew it, Joseph was making his first class debut in February 2023.<\/p>\n

Now he has 13 Test wickets from two matches, and claims Steve Smith as his first<\/a>, which came from his maiden ball.<\/p>\n

\ufeffHaving announced himself on the international stage, the fear will be he could shun Test cricket opportunities for T20 franchises, like so many before him.<\/p>\n

However, Joseph declared that won't be happening after the West Indies' incredible victory over \ufeffAustralia.<\/p>\n

"This is my dream … to play Test cricket for \ufeffthe West Indies," he said post-match.<\/p>\n

"I'm not afraid to say this. There will be times when T20 cricket might come around. Test cricket will be there. And I will say this live. I will always be available to play for the West Indies, no matter how much money it takes or come towards me. So I will always be here to play Test cricket."<\/p>\n

Part of Joseph's defiance can be put down to the relationship he's built with Brathwaite, which has blossomed in only a matter of weeks.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old wasn't expected to bowl on day four at the Gabba after a painful toe injury forced him to retire hurt the night before<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, some miracle work from the West Indies' doctors helped him back on the field as he proceeded to take 7-68 which included the match-winning wicket of Josh Hazlewood.<\/p>\n

Joseph, who bowled 12 overs straight at the end of the match, told Brathwaite he wasn't getting the ball out of his hands and it seems a lot of that was down to the leadership of the captain himself. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I just wanted to make him proud, I think I did make him proud and happy to bring this series to 1-1, I will always stick by his side since he believed in me," he said.<\/p>\n

"He's a great leader, he always keeps his head up \ufeffno matter the situation of the game, he keeps believing and keeps supporting his players in whatever they want to do."<\/p>\n

Brathwaite was also asked about how West Indies cricket will look to ensure Joseph isn't lost to the five-day format and admitted "it's a balance". \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Look at Alzarri Joseph, he's in the IPL and one thing I'll say is he has a lot of heart for Test cricket and he wants to be here," he said.<\/p>\n

"Today he was tired and he still came in those last two overs at the tail.<\/p>\n

"Once you have the love for this game and hard Test cricket, as long as you have the balance, I think that's key."<\/p>\n

Now after winning their first match in Australia since 1997, all eyes will be on the development of the West Indies as a Test playing nation.<\/p>\n

For years, they've been the side everyone wants to succeed.<\/p>\n

When players like Jason Holder chose T20 commitments over the Australian series<\/a>, many bemoaned the death of Test cricket in the West Indies.<\/p>\n

However, with a young crop of talented players, the West Indies may just have found their next generation.<\/p>\n

A group of players hungry for Test cricket and determined to return the side back to its glory days, just as Joseph declared: "This win for us is really important and I think this is just the beginning for us to move forward and do great things for West Indies cricket."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
