Lleyton Hewitt<\/a>, Andre Agassi, Simona Halep, and now Jannik Sinner. They're the four grand slam winners that Australian coach Darren Cahill<\/a> has guided to victory.<\/p>\n

Cahill, a former pro player turned coach, joined the Sinner camp less than two years ago to help the young Italian who had so much raw potential.<\/p>\n

It's been a meteoric rise since, and the 22-year-old is now an Australian Open<\/a> winner after defeating Daniil Medvedev<\/a><\/p>\n

Speaking post-match, Sinner hailed the efforts of his team \u2013 in particular, Cahill.<\/p>\n

"You know it better than me, I guess," he chuckled when asked by Aussie great Hewitt about Cahill's influence.<\/p>\n

"We were calm throughout the whole day today. He kept the team with a great composure and he is a very nice man.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"He has his great family next to him, behind him, and this makes him a very special coach. It's crazy."<\/p>\n

Cahill, along with Italian Simone Vagnozzi, make up the dual coach set-up within Team Sinner.<\/p>\n

The Aussie joined after Wimbledon in 2022, where Sinner was knocked out in the quarter-finals by Novak Djokovic in five sets having held a two-set lead.<\/p>\n

In the last six months, their relationship has started to bear fruit.<\/p>\n

He's recorded victories against some of the biggest names in tennis including Carlos Alcaraz, Grigor Dimitrov, Andrey Rublev and Frances Tiafoe.<\/p>\n

Add to that Medvedev and Djokovic three times each.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Despite Sinner's \ufeffsensational run of form, Adelaide native Cahill remained humble and suggested much of the credit should go to Vagnozzi, claiming his role is more as a supervisor and mentor.<\/p>\n

But it's Cahill's calming nature that has received much of the plaudits.\ufeff<\/p>\n

In the fourth set on Sunday night, with Sinner on the up and Medvedev \u2013 who spent more time on-court than any other player in grand slam \ufeffhistory \u2013 rapidly tiring, Cahill could be heard repeating "champion mindset" to the 22-year-old.<\/p>\n

"Simone had to work out a way to get Jannik back into the contest, and once he got back into the contest, it was about the fight because Daniil was never going to go away," Cahill said after the match.<\/p>\n

"Once you get to a fourth or fifth set, it really just becomes about what lies inside you, and he had the answers inside him.<\/p>\n

"You just have to force yourself to push through those moments to come up with the big shots, believe and be brave through those moments.<\/p>\n

\"Sinner's<\/p>\n

"I just keep reinforcing the stuff that we talk about all the time. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't sometimes.<\/p>\n

"Certainly today it kept his attention and his focus in the match, which was important."<\/p>\n

A young Hewitt was the first player Cahill worked with. It was under Cahill that Hewitt became the then-youngest ever singles world No.1.<\/p>\n

Hewitt hailed Cahill's experience to bring Sinner back into the contest against Medvedev having been down two sets early in the contest.<\/p>\n

"To look up to the coach's box and have someone like Darren Cahill siting there, trying to calm him down – in the end, it paid dividends," said Hewitt on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

\"Sinner<\/p>\n

"I had him when he was fairly young, first tour coach for me and I was his first tour player.<\/p>\n

"It came at a different stage than he is at with Jannik, but he's got such so much experience now as well.<\/p>\n

"He's coached the very top men's players, but also on the women's side as well … he's just a great bloke and a good guy to have in your corner.<\/p>\n

"I have no doubt that he would have helped him a lot over the last three or four days, preparing for massive matches that he'd never been a part of before."<\/p>\n

Four-time grand slam winner Jim Courier weighed in, too, offering Cahill plenty of praise for his influence on Sinner.<\/p>\n

"Darren Cahill is never gonna be without a player if he wants to coach," he said on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

"He is gonna be in demand, because he delivers. I think it's the manner in which he delivers information that makes him so successful.<\/p>\n

"There's a lot of coaches that know what's happening and strategy, but it's just as important how you say things and when you say things.<\/p>\n

"It must have been invaluable to have someone of Darren's experience on the team to help him manage the time between his amazing win over Novak and the beginning of this match. That's when your mind, as a young player, can wander and start to wonder 'what if' … instead of focusing on the match.<\/p>\n
