Alexander Zverev<\/a> has again fallen short in a grand slam, leading to question marks over the German star's mental toughness.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old was eliminated from the Australian Open<\/a> on Friday night, giving up a two-set lead against Daniil Medvedev<\/a> in their semi-final clash on Rod Laver Arena.<\/p>\n

Zverev has continually failed to reach the mountaintop throughout his singles career, with his only appearance in a major final coming at the 2020 US Open, where he was beaten in five sets by Dominic Thiem\ufeff.<\/p>\n

The latest defeat at the hands of his bitter rival in Medvedev has only further fuelled concerns over his ability to get the job done in clutch moments, with former world No.5 Daniela Hantuchova claiming past deficiencies were on show once again.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately just like many times before, he couldn't halt the nerves," she told Stan Sport's Grand Slam Daily<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"The history they had between them, Daniil was finding ways to get back into the match and really got into Sascha's head. Once that was the case, he had him.<\/p>\n

"In this year's Australian Open, it showed physically how strong he is – but mentally, he needs to be a little bit stronger.<\/p>\n

"I did feel sorry for him .. let's hope that his time will come, because he does deserve to have a grand slam title."<\/p>\n

After taking out the first two sets against Medvedev, the frustration clearly began to creep in for Zverev during the third and fourth set tie-breakers, before a complete capitulation in the decider handed the Russian star a one-way ticket to Sunday's final.<\/p>\n

Zverev \ufeffclaimed in his post-match press conference that an illness hindered his performance<\/a> as the contest progressed, revealing his energy levels dropped midway through.<\/p>\n

And while many are pushing for a major overhaul to his approach to tennis in order to become a grand slam winner, \ufeffHantuchova believes a breakthrough isn't far away.<\/p>\n

"I think with Sascha, he doesn't need to change anything in his game and just keep knocking on the door," she said.<\/p>\n

"I feel he will find a way, because he is probably stronger than we give him credit for.<\/p>\n

"He finds a way to get about things that we always discuss with his game or his stuff of the court – he is able to block that out.<\/p>\n

"He was so close (on Friday night) – it's a matter of time and being patient and having that belief that his time will come."<\/p>\n

Medvedev will take on Jannik Sinner in the final, while Zverev will pack his bags and return home in preparation for a bumper 2024 season and attempt to finally reach the prize that has alluded him.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
