Despite having lost to Jannik Sinner<\/a> in each of their last three meetings, Nine tennis caller Sam Smith believes it's Daniil Medvedev<\/a>'s "time" to win another grand slam.<\/p>\n

Medvedev and Sinner will meet on Rod Laver Arena in the final of the Australian Open<\/a> on Sunday night. It's the first Melbourne Park final to not include Novak Djokovic<\/a>, Rafael Nadal<\/a> or Roger Federer<\/a> since 2005.<\/p>\n

Medvedev has a six-and-three head-to-head record against the Italian but has lost their last three encounters, each in gripping encounters.<\/p>\n

Two of those three encounters were decided in three sets, and both sets of the third were decided in tie-breakers.<\/p>\n

Despite having as much grand slam final experience as Qinwen Zheng did against Aryna Sabalenka in the women's final, Smith said Sinner and Zheng were completely different scenarios.<\/p>\n

"That was a lot for her last night \u2013 she hasn't played at that level for long enough," Smith explained on Nine's Weekend Today.<\/p>\n

"Whereas Jannik Sinner, he's taken out the king (Novak Djokovic) and he's been top-10 for a while now.<\/p>\n

"He's been in the last six months beating all the best players in the world, including the last three times, Daniil Medvedev."<\/p>\n

To go with the three wins against Medvedev, Sinner in the six months since Wimbledon has notched wins against Alex de Minaur, Carlos Alcaraz, Grigor Dimitrov, Ben Shelton, Andrey Rublev, Frances Tiafoe, and Novak Djokovic twice, among others.<\/p>\n

He is a career-high No.4 in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

But despite these giant-slaying efforts, Smith said Sunday night would belong to Medvedev.<\/p>\n

"There is part of me \u2013 maybe not a rational part of me \u2013 that feels despite Daniil's marathon matches, it's kind of his time," she said.<\/p>\n

"I don't know why I feel like that, but it just is. It's just one of those sorts of instinct things, maybe from watching so much tennis over the years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I think we will have a much more competitive men's final than women's final. That's my feeling."<\/p>\n

She said the cooler conditions at night would also suit the 2021 US Open champion.<\/p>\n

"It's so much faster in the day. When Sinner played Djokovic, that really helped this brilliant young Italian.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"At night, it slows down and that really plays into the hands of Medvedev. So for me, that's a huge factor."<\/p>\n
