The West Indies<\/a> attempt to win the second Test against Australia<\/a> has suffered a major blow after Shamar Joseph<\/a> retired hurt during his side's second innings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Joseph was struck flush on the toe by a Mitchell Starc<\/a> yorker and had to depart, ending the West Indies' second innings on 193 with Australia set 216 to win.<\/p>\n

The young gun was originally given out lbw but a review showed Starc had bowled a no ball, however Joseph was in too much pain to carry on.<\/p>\n

The tail-ender ended up removing his sock and shoe and fell to the ground in agony as he was assisted off the field.<\/p>\n

"That's a painful blow … not a great sight at all," England legend Michael Vaughan said on Fox Cricket.<\/p>\n

Commentator Mark Howard added: "He is in a lot of bother \ufeff… there's grave concern."<\/p>\n

Joseph's grimacing as he went off was an unfortunate sight, with the 24-year-old unlikely to bowl in Australia's second innings. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Cameras also picked up his toe bleeding. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"T\ufeffhat's got to be a broken toe doesn't it?," Mark Waugh asked upon reviewing the footage after the incident.<\/p>\n

The fast bowler's injury was an unfortunate way to end the West Indies' innings, having started the day at 1-13. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Kraigg Brathwaite and Kirk McKenzie combined for a 50-run partnership to start the first session, before the former was dismissed for 16.<\/p>\n

A steady flow of wickets kept Australia in the game with McKenzie (41), Alick Athanaze\ufeff (35), Kavem Hodge (29) and Justin Greaves (33) all failing to go on with starts.<\/p>\n

Greaves' departure came at 7-184, with the tail-enders failing to add too many runs to the score.<\/p>\n

Kevin Sinclair's 14 not out off 59 runs\ufeff signalled the West Indies' defensive intent in the final session with he and Kemar Roach (1) combining for a one-run partnership off 29 balls.<\/p>\n

Eventually the West Indies were all out for 193 when Joseph had to leave the field retired hurt as Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon finished with three wickets each.<\/p>\n

Australia was left with just under an hour-and-a-half to bat under lights with the match in the balance.<\/p>\n

Usman Khawaja (10) and Marnus Labuschagne (5) both fell before stumps with Steve Smith not out on 33.<\/p>\n

Cameron Green also finished on 9 not out and survived a massive lbw appeal late in the night off Justin Greaves' bowling.<\/p>\n

Australia ended the night at 2-60\ufeff, needing 156 runs to win.<\/p>\n
