A\ufefflexander Zverev<\/a> has blamed illness for his breakdown against world No.3 Daniil Medvedev<\/a> that saw him cough up not only a crucial two-set lead but also a maiden Australian Open<\/a> finals berth.<\/p>\n

Zverev took the opening two sets 7-5, 6-3, before crumbling and losing the final three sets 6-7, 6-7, 3-6 to Medvedev\ufeff<\/a>, who will now appear in his third Australian Open final on Sunday night against Jannik Sinner.<\/p>\n

Zverev's frustration after giving up a two-set lead was on full display late in the match, getting into an argument with the chair umpire in the fourth set and smashing the net in the fifth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old world No.6 will be ruing the missed opportunities \ufeffagainst his bitter rival, opening up on where he believes it all began to go south.<\/p>\n

"End of the second set I started to lose energy. I started to not feel, you know, so fresh anymore," Zverev told the media on Friday night.<\/p>\n

"I mean, I am a bit sick. I got a bit sick after the (Carlos) Alcaraz match with a bit of fever and stuff like that, so that obviously didn't help the recovery, and I did play quite a lot.<\/p>\n

"Just loss of energy a little bit in the end of the second set, and against him, it's impossible to play when you're not 100 per cent physically, because he's literally someone that really doesn't give you anything."<\/p>\n

Zverev admitted that he couldn't keep up with 27-year-old Medvedev, who said he was able to adapt his style to break down the German's game plan as early as the second set.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He makes you work for every single point, and once you kind of can't really do that anymore, it becomes very difficult," Zverev said.<\/p>\n

"Obviously I was very close in the third and fourth set, but I wasn't, you know, the same player as I was the first two sets anymore.<\/p>\n

"I was kind of just hanging on."<\/p>\n

Medvedev spoke candidly about his hopes of winning a maiden Australian Open after losses in 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n

"We say third time lucky, so let's see," Medvedev said on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

"It will mean a lot. This court is not my best court in terms of my performance – that's why many times I have had to dig deep.<\/p>\n
