The NRL<\/a> along with other sporting codes, issued a statement on Friday morning acknowledging the "pain and sorrow" Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people feel on Australia Day.<\/p>\n

The National Rugby League\ufeff did not follow other codes like the Australian cricket team and the Port Adelaide<\/a> AFL club in calling for a change of date, with Australia's national rugby league teams, the Kangaroos and Jillaroos, reposting the NRL's message.<\/p>\n

"The NRL acknowledges that today represents a painful and sorrowful day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples," the league said in a statement.<\/p>\n

"Today, we pay tribute to the resilience and the enormous contribution our Aboriginal and Torres Strait brothers and sisters make to our nation and the greatest game for all."<\/p>\n

South Sydney<\/a>, a club with a rich history of links to the Indigenous community, also posted.<\/p>\n

"At the Rabbitohs, we understand that today is a day Australians pause to reflect upon and celebrate the unique qualities of our nation. For many, though, it is also a painful and difficult day," the club posted on social media.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Today, the Rabbitohs join in acknowledging the many and varied cultures that make up our modern Australian nation. At the same time, we pay special tribute to our Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters and honour them as custodians of the oldest living culture on the planet.<\/p>\n

"Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land."<\/p>\n

Some of Australia's most high-profile cricketers called for Australia Day to be moved from January 26, with Test captain Pat Cummins and Steve Smith both putting their names to the campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A number of AFL clubs also posted messages, highlighting the sensitivity of the date and how hurtful it is for Indigenous Australians.<\/p>\n

However, Port Adelaide called for a different date to be nominated along with the AFL Players' Association.<\/p>\n

"The Port Adelaide Football Club acknowledges our First Nations people's continuous connection to these lands for more than 60,000 years, and that the 26th of January represents a day of immense sadness and sorrow for many in our community," Port Adelaide said in a post on X.<\/p>\n
