Australian Matt Ebden<\/a> and his men's doubles partner Rohan Bopanna are through to the final at the Australian Open<\/a> after defeating Tomas Machac and Zhizhen Zhang 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7) in their semi-final clash.<\/p>\n

After comfortably claiming the opening set in just over half an hour, the pairing was challenged as their unseeded opponents mounted a comeback in the second.<\/p>\n

Ebden and Bopanna broke early in the deciding third set but were soon reeled in as Machac and Zhang forced a first-to-10 tiebreaker to determine the match.<\/p>\n

But with a solid performance on first serve, Ebden and Bopanna prevailed 10-7.<\/p>\n

Moving through the tournament, the duo's victory in the quarters was enough to bump up their ATP doubles rankings, with the new rankings to be released on Monday.<\/p>\n

At 43 years of age and after 21 years on tour, \ufeffBopanna made history on Wednesday as the oldest player to be crowned world No.1 in men's doubles for the first time.<\/p>\n

Ebden also rose to No.2 and will share the same number of points as Bopanna but with the Indian having played fewer tournaments, Bopanna grabbed top spot.<\/p>\n

Speaking during his post-match press conference, \ufeffBopanna admitted the milestone had not yet sunk in.<\/p>\n

"A lot of messages, a lot of love, which came in," he said of the public response.<\/p>\n

"But obviously the first and foremost was for me to get ready and be ready for playing this semi-final match.<\/p>\n

"Once the tournament is fully done and I have a couple of weeks at home at least, I think I can really, you know, relive that moment.<\/p>\n

"But of course very, very proud to be in this position and be ranked as the No.1 player in the world."<\/p>\n

Bopanna showed great sportsmanship in the third set, raising his hand to alert the chair umpire that he had touched the net, conceding a point during a crucial service game.<\/p>\n

At that point in the match, he and Ebden had a break and were steaming towards victory. However, soon after their rivals broke back to set up a thrilling finish.<\/p>\n
