P\ufeffERTH:<\/strong> Australia captain Charlotte Caslick says her crack rugby sevens<\/a> team is the fastest she has ever played with or against as the tournament hosts eye a rare hat trick on home soil.<\/p>\n

Australia's women are sitting pretty at the top of the 2023-24 world series standings after dominating the first two legs in Dubai<\/a> and Cape Town.<\/a><\/p>\n

\ufeffThat hot start has now marked them as favourites for Olympic Games gold in Paris and defending champions New Zealand are suddenly the hunters and not the hunted.<\/p>\n

\"Charlotte<\/p>\n

"It's definitely something we're talking about and it's good practice, I guess, with added pressure being a home tournament leading into an Olympic year," Caslick told reporters at a sun-drenched Scarborough Beach on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"We want to be the best and we always have been challenging New Zealand and been chasing them for the last season."<\/p>\n

Caslick, 28, said the 2022 season – when Australia won the world series, World Cup and Commonwealth Games – was a benchmark in terms of handling pressure and stacking success on success.<\/p>\n

On the flipside, last year's Sydney Sevens – in which Australia finished fifth – provided some harsh lessons for some of the younger members in the squad.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Australia's home tournament has this year shifted to Perth, with HBF Park hosting a three day integrated men's and women's SVNS ex\ufefftravaganza from Friday-Sunday.<\/p>\n

Caslick credited former Waratahs centre Tom Carter – the team's head of athletic performance\ufeff – for taking the youngsters in the team to another level.<\/p>\n

"Just the athleticism, like they're extremely talented and the way that they can run and jump and lift in the gym is something I've never seen before. Tom Carter has done an amazing job getting them into such good shape," she said.<\/p>\n

"They're just extremely powerful and obviously then there's a few girls in the middle that can distribute to these damaging edge players, get them the ball early and you can see what they do when they've got more space … it's pretty scary for other teams to think that we've just got these girls waiting to come onto the field when we need them like Kaitlin Shave, Bienne Terita and Heidi Dennis.<\/p>\n

"They're all hopefully going to have a lot of experience by Paris and yeah, we just have a lot of speed."<\/p>\n

\"Charlotte<\/p>\n

Caslick \ufeffbelieved that overall, it would be the fastest team she had played with or against.<\/p>\n

"I think so. I think we would have – just the numbers that they put out, day in, day out … it's like anything, if you don't run fast, you won't get better at it."<\/p>\n

Australia will face Canada, Great Britain and South Africa in pool A in Perth.\ufeff<\/p>\n

And they will have to navigate those games without the world's \ufeffform player, Maddison Levi, who was suspended for three games after being sent off for a dangerous tackle in the Cape Town final.<\/p>\n

"Obviously she'll be a bit more fresh than she normally is in the quarter-final," Caslick quipped.<\/p>\n

"She's been fine – relieved. We still won in Cape Town after she got red but it's part of rugby… we're probably expecting to see a little bit more of that with the yellow and red cards."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
