A freak accident involving a knife has left Geelong Cats<\/a> legend Steve Johnson<\/a> lucky to be alive.<\/p>\n

Johnson, who kicked 516 goals from 293 games with the Cats and Giants<\/a>, was taken to Wangaratta hospital on Monday night with a deep wound to his stomach.<\/p>\n

It's believed Johnson was opening a gate at his property with a knife he was carrying in a bag somehow pierced through the bag and into his abdomen.<\/p>\n

Luckily for the three-time premiership gun, he has a nurse as a neighbour, and they were able to apply pressure to the rapidly bleeding wound before he was taken to hospital, where he remains.<\/p>\n

While he has some damage to his bowel, Johnson is expected to make a full recovery.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Johnson was awarded the Norm Smith Medal in the 2007 grand final and is a three-time All-Australian.<\/p>\n

Johnson left the Cats at the end of 2015 before spending the final two seasons of his career at GWS.<\/p>\n

He then moved into coaching roles with the Swans and Giants.<\/p>\n

He moved into bush footy for the 2022 season and led the Yarrawonga Pigeons to the flag in the Ovens and Murray Football League in his second season at the helm.<\/p>\n

"The YFNC would like to wish our Senior Coach, Steve Johnson a quick and full recovery from his accident on Monday night," the Pigeons said in a club statement.<\/p>\n

"As you may be aware Steve suffered a nasty stomach wound in a freak accident.<\/p>\n

"He has been treated at the Wangaratta Hospital and like all things, time will heal.<\/p>\n
