I\ufefft wasn't quite a case of Steven Bradbury's famous Olympic victory at Salt Lake City in 2002, but the closing stages of a speed skating race at the Winter Youth Olympics<\/a> were on Monday rocked by a dramatic crash.<\/p>\n

The USA's Sean Shuai\ufeff took gold in the men's 500m short track speed skating in Gangwon, South Korea. The 17-year-old hit the lead immediately and never surrendered it.<\/p>\n

In the battle for the minor podium spots, China's Zhang Bohao and the Philippines' Peter Groseclose appeared to have the silver and bronze medals wrapped up after negotiating the final bend.<\/p>\n

Then disaster struck.<\/p>\n

Attempting a last-ditch overtake of Zhang on the inside, Groseclose collided into his rival.<\/p>\n

Zhang and Groseclose\ufeff both lost their footing and sprawled across the ice, paving the way for China's Zhang Xinzhe and Hungary's Dominik Major to snatch the minor podium positions, snaring silver and bronze respectively.<\/p>\n

The silver and bronze medallists reacted in vastly different ways. While the silver medallist\ufeff looked around in disbelief and was quick to console his fallen compatriot, the bronze medallist pumped his fists and shouted with delight.<\/p>\n

Groseclose was then penalised for causing the crash.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Shuai\ufeff won in 41.498 seconds, edging his closest rival by .257 of a second.<\/p>\n

The Youth Olympics are for athletes aged between 15 and 18.\ufeff<\/p>\n
