The Russian has been something of a crowd favourite at this year's grand slam.<\/p>\n

He has on several occasions enjoyed lengthy post-match interviews and has been generally positive despite awkward circumstances.<\/p>\n

Most notably, he was fairly chirpy after a five-setter against Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori that lasted four hours and 23 minutes, finishing at 3.39am.<\/p>\n

In years gone by, Medvedev has been known to lash out at crowd members. However, a new year means a new mentality.<\/p>\n

"This year was good, it was great," said Medvedev.<\/p>\n

"As I said already before the tournament, look, I want to try to change it. When I say 'to change it', not that, 'Guys, please love me', or whatever, no.<\/p>\n

"I just want to think less about it, do my job, play tennis. Still can get some interactions with my box, but less with the crowd.<\/p>\n

"Especially last year I felt like I've done a little bit too much. End of the season I was tired mentally. Then it's normal, there is 10,000 people, one guy would clap on a double-fault, I would go at him. I think, yeah, that was definitely not right.<\/p>\n

"I want to change in many, many aspects in my life. That's one of them. I think so far it's been working. Let's see how it goes later."<\/p>\n

Medvedev leant right into his new approach to how he treats crowds after his win over Nuno Borges.\ufeff<\/p>\n

He and Jim Courier engaged in an all-time great post-match interview that has to be seen to be believed.<\/p>\n

Medvedev is one of the men's tour's most prolific service returners and is known for unleashing returns from deep in the court.<\/p>\n

Courier, a two-time Australian Open winner, decided to quiz the No.3 on his unorthodox but successful technique.<\/p>\n

Jim Courier:<\/strong> "Your return of serve, it's become so deep in the court, but when you started, you didn't start there. You're a master of the return of serve, could you give us a little masterclass on the evolution of your return? Would you mind walking back and showing me how you do this? I need to learn myself how you do this. You can take the microphone if you want."<\/p>\n

Daniil Medvedev:<\/strong> "You called me the master of the return, but I don't think so, because my return from close, I don't think it's that good. I can do it, but it's not the best, you can ask Novak or someone else.<\/p>\n

"I came on tour and there is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who is only doing 220 km\/h (serves) and I'm like, 'OK' and I lost the match, I remember, pretty easy with no break points. At one moment I just understood that's where my return is the best and I started playing better."<\/p>\n

Courier:<\/strong> "God, the net is a long way from here. Could someone who's maybe normal-sized like me defend the court from back here? Or do you have to be super tall like you?"<\/p>\n

Medvedev:<\/strong> "What's good from here, it's very tough to hit it out. So you can hit pretty strong and many times you're going to be surprised it's going to go in. You should try it!"<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
