M\ufeffack Horton<\/a> has revealed the 'blissful' nature that awaits him in retirement, with the Olympic<\/a> gold medallist finishing his swimming<\/a> career prior to Paris 2024.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old enjoyed a successful \ufeffcareer in the pool, claiming gold in the 400m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but has opted to bow out after admitting the "hunger wasn't there" to continue.<\/p>\n

Horton will now move into the marketing world, beginning a new job on Monday, and reflected on his decision during an interview with Nine's Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"I think it was probably the worst-kept secret in the little swimming world, but broader of that, maybe it was a bit of a shock," he said.<\/p>\n

"I always wanted to leave swimming still loving it … I still love it now, I'm going to keep swimming, but I don't have the desire to stand behind the blocks.<\/p>\n

"I had clarity, but I think you have to sit with it for a bit to make sure that you're certain and get comfortable with that decision. It's obviously a big change and transition. I've been swimming for 17 years, it's all I know.<\/p>\n

"There's not really any going back – my wife said 'You're not doing one of those things where you retire and come back' so I had to make sure I was certain.<\/p>\n

"I love the grind, I love pushing myself, I love going to the edge … I am gonna miss that, but I look forward to getting stuck into something else and finding other ways to challenge myself."<\/p>\n

Horton first burst onto the scene as a teenager during the 2014 Commonwealth Games\ufeff and became one of the faces of Australian swimming for the next decade.<\/p>\n

Quizzed on how he will feel later this year when some of his former teammates head to Paris, Horton gave a surprising response about being at home for the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

"Bliss, I think," he said.<\/p>\n

"When you're at the Olympics or World Champs, all you see is the room and the village, the hotel, the swimming pool or the bus.<\/p>\n
