Linda Noskova is through \ufeffto the Australian Open<\/a> quarterfinals after her fourth round opponent was forced to retire only three games in.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian Elina Svitolina<\/a> appeared to tweak her back in the last point of a marathon 11-minute, 20-point opening game<\/a>, which Noskova won to claim an early break.<\/p>\n

Noskova held her first game, bu\ufefft it was clear Svitolina was in discomfort.<\/p>\n

\"Elina<\/p>\n

She called a medical timeout between games, and had a physio immediately go to work on her lower back.<\/p>\n

"It has to be bad when Elina Svitolina calls the physio \u2013 she's one of the toughest players out there," Andrea Petkovic said in commentary.\ufeff<\/p>\n

At the end of the medical timeout, it was clear Svitolina was still in no condition to continue \u2013 her service motion was stiff and she was barely moving around the court.\ufeff<\/p>\n

She was broken again, and then pulled the pin.<\/p>\n

"This is just absolutely heartbreaking to watch \u2026 there is going to be a few people with a few tears in their eyes," Mark Petchey said in commentary.<\/p>\n

"There's an awful lot going on off the court for Svitolina at the moment, where her mind is every morning when she wakes up," he said referring to her outspoken comments on the Russian-Ukraine war.<\/p>\n

"To have to pull out (of a) grand slam, having done fantastically well to get through to this stage is going to be an heartbreaker for the 29-year-old … one of the toughest competitors out there on the tour."<\/p>\n

Reiterating her earlier comments, Petkovic said her "hopes left when the physio appeared on court".<\/p>\n

"I know how pain resilient Elina Svitolina is. I think she would rather chop her leg off than call the physio on."<\/p>\n

In her post-match interview, Noskova \u2013 who on Saturday night knocked out world No.1 Iga Swiatek \u2013 sent her best wishes to Svitolina.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffNot the way I have planned to win. I feel sorry for Elina \u2013 hope she gets very well soon," the 19-year-old said, before explaining the extra attention on her after claiming the biggest win of her career changed her preparation for this match.<\/p>\n

"I had to think a little more about this match, because obviously the attention (from) winning against such a player as I did a few days ago was really tough to overcome. <\/p>\n

"But I think I prepared myself for this match very well mentally.<\/p>\n

"I'm playing a grand slam. There's not many more choices. I just had to find a way to focus fully on this match."<\/p>\n

Noskova's quater-final will be against another Ukrainian, qualifier Dayana Yastremska after she beat Victoria Azarenka in straight sets 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
