Alex de Minaur<\/a> didn't do too much wrong in a four-hour, five-set epic loss to world No.5 Andrey Rublev on Sunday night<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But there was one decision during the third set that American tennis<\/a> icon John McEnroe<\/a> \ufeffpredicted could be costly – and he was correct.<\/p>\n

De Minaur was well on top of Rublev when he was leading 3-0 in the third, having won the second in a tiebreaker to square the match at 1-1.<\/p>\n

But the Aussie then called for a medical timeout \ufeffto deal with a pesky blister on his right heel.<\/p>\n

The match was paused for several minutes, during which time Rublev – who had been melting down early in the third set – took time to compose himself.<\/p>\n

"Surprising (de Minaur) takes a medical timeout with the roll he's on," McEnroe noted during commentary for Nine.<\/p>\n

"The negative is it gives (Rublev) the chance to regroup mentally, get his concentration back."<\/p>\n

Rublev was seen sitting down during the timeout, chatting to his player's box and essentially catching his breath.<\/p>\n

Once play got back underway, the Russian broke back to push the third set to a tiebreaker.<\/p>\n

While de Minaur got back on top and won the set, Rublev then largely dominated \ufeffthe fourth and fifth sets to eliminate the Aussie.<\/p>\n

De Minaur later refused to blame the blister or the timeout for the change in tempo.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"No, didn't impact me. An injury is never going to impact a result in my matches," he said.<\/p>\n

"Ultimately doesn't matter if I'm playing on one leg, I'm going to be competitive until the end.<\/p>\n
